An enormous illegal landfill persists at the roundabout towards Cinisello, between via Edison di Monza and via Ciro Menotti in Cinisello, behind the San Fruttuoso gardening centre. Giovanni and Albino, two volunteer ecological guards from the Milan metropolitan area, reported this with regret and a sense of helplessness.

“For months it has been full of rubbish – says Giovanni – it is a real environmental disaster with tanks of paint, used oils, perhaps even asbestos, car tires and bags of waste of all kinds. We often pass by to carry out checks and another day we saw a van that stopped and unloaded some cans of paint and brushes. We can’t do anything because it is the territory of Monza over which, like the GEV of the Milan metropolitan area, we have no powers, but we have filmed the license plate and will report it. to the administrations”. To date, illegal dumping is a criminal offence, both when it is carried out by private individuals and companies. Albino, like Gev and as a citizen, says he is worried and saddened: “We turned to the local police of Cinisello, who pointed out that the responsibility for that plot of land lies with the Municipality of Monza, with which, however, as a nucleus Gev metropolitan area does not we can talk. We should put up a surveillance camera, with a camera trap – the two volunteers suggest – even just the sign would act as a deterrent. We know that the ecology department had already cleaned up the area, but it’s not enough for us , because we dedicate time for the community.” And if the metropolitan GEVs do not have the possibility of interacting with the ecology department of Monza for territorial reasons, we did it.

“It’s all true – admits ecology councilor Giada Turato – that area is the responsibility of Monza: as soon as you clean, they go back to dumping everything. For this reason, without waiting for the widespread digitalisation program planned for the city, we have already purchased two video cameras that will be connected with the local police: one for the Monza/Cinisello area and the other for Sant’Albino via dell’Offelera which has been an illegal landfill there for decades placed in Cantalupo, it was decisive.” It will take 60 days for the supply, in agreement with the Cinisello administration which authorized the use of the poles for positioning. Meanwhile, according to the councilor, the urban garbage service cleaned a few days ago. But if there really was asbestos, its removal would cost thousands of euros, a serious damage to the community. The two Ecological Guard operators were more critical: “In reality it had been cleaned some time ago. We often pass by and it is clear that the problem has returned.”
