L’Aquila makes peace with Perugia 600 years later – L’Aquila

THE EAGLE. It took more than six centuries, a siege of a year and the death of one of the most feared leaders of the time: that Braccio da Montone who tried, but failed, to defeat L’Aquila, defended with drawn sword by Jacopo Caldora. The year was 1424. Last Sunday, 16 June 2024, a real “reconciliation” between the two cities took place in the heart of Perugia, Braccio’s hometown. The protagonist of the initiative was the municipal administration of L’Aquila, which thus took part in the ninth edition of “Perugia 1416”, one of the major medieval-Renaissance historical re-enactments, which recalls, among other things, the entry into the Umbrian city by part of Braccio da Montone.
«A delegation from our Municipality», explained the mayor Pierluigi Biondi and the councillor Manuela Tursini, who represented the mayor himself on the occasion of the event, «shared participation in an event of this type in the city that belonged to “Braccio Fortebracci”, known as Braccio da Montone. The initiative represents a milestone in the relations between our two cities, a symbol of lived history and a shared vision for the future. Special thanks go to the social promotion association “Perugia 1416” and to the Municipality of Perugia for the invitation to our Municipality. Similar gratitude”, they concluded, “also goes to the Compagnia Rosso d’Aquila, because without his commitment this historic moment would not have been possible”. (tdb)
