Investments by the ‘Ndrangheta: what are the activities preferred by the underworld in Lombardy

Milan, 19 June 2024 – “The activities of the police forces and the Dia during the semester they continued on a more purely preventive level, through anti-mafia checks on companies interested in works connected to the Pnrr and those connected to the Olympics of Milan-Cortina 2026. In this context, the enforcement action by the Prefectures has remained constant with the adoption of interdictory measures which mostly concerned companies with ties with the ‘ndrangheta“.

The latest report from the Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate, referring to the first six months of 2023 and presented yesterday in Rome, is in line with previous ones, outlining a predominance in Lombardy of the Calabrian underworld compared to those of Campania and Sicily origin. “The regional context, characterized by an efficient and driving economic and production model, represents mafia-type criminal groups an excellent opportunity for laundering and reusing illicit proceedsfor this reason to be infiltrated without resorting to violent methods”, note the Anti-Mafia experts. And again: “The search for consensus and acceptance on the part of economic operators is the objective of organizations such as the ‘Ndrangheta, whose social consensus is growing, precisely because subjects whose belonging to mafia contexts is clear are consideredby local socio-economic operators reliable interlocutors with whom to do business.”

And proof of what was put in black and white in the report comes from the number of interdictions imposed by the Lombardy Prefectures in the first half of last year: 25 in total, of which almost half (12) “in contexts of Calabrian organized crime”.

Ten of these were adopted by Palazzo Diotti: “A propensity of mafia criminal groups to be present in a plurality of economic and business sectors has emerged”. Which? “The catering sector was undoubtedly the most attractive (5 disqualifications from Corso Monforte, ed.) – we read again in the dossier, confirming a trend already highlighted in the recent past -. With reference to the ‘Ndrangheta, Interests have also emerged in construction, real estate and the maintenance and repair of motor vehiclesas ascertained during the anti-mafia investigations carried out by the Prefecture of Milan, which allowed three disqualification measures to be issued against as many companies active in the aforementioned economic sectors”. Prevention, yes, but also repression of the phenomenon.

The investigations of recent years have contributed decisively to disarticulate various criminal structures, which however, on several occasions photographed precisely by the judicial investigations of the DDA, have shown a strong and sometimes surprising ability to recover in a short time. “The consistency of many groups has been reduced by the counteraction of the institutions, despite their particular dynamism making them elusive – notes the Anti-Mafia –. This is due to the continuous phases of regeneration and structural renewal, not always deducible from the investigative evidence , of the grafting of new members or from the interaction with other associations, even of different origins or geographical origins”.
