ANCONA A month of preparation. Four shows. Point. The mountain gave birth to the little mouse. The maxi arena at the ancient port was supposed to take place in the Ancona summer. “Never again events with a dropper like in the past” had assured the councilor for major events, Angelo Eliantonio. Yet the summer of great live shows in the city even loses a historic festival: Spilla, which for 17 years – without ever stopping, not even during Covid – has brought the most important international names in the pop-rock scene to Ancona. Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers, Richard Ashcroft, are just some of the artists programmed by Spilla and for which thousands of spectators have traveled from all over central Italy: precisely when they say that great shows bring tourism. But this year Spilla won’t be there. So no big international events in Ancona, but many smaller, self-produced, neighborhood events. Plus some rare cries of notoriety.

The setup

A month of preparation, therefore, for the arena on the sea: from 1st July to 31st. It will be inaugurated by UlisseFest on July 4th with a concert by Vasco Brondi. The singer-songwriter from Ferrara emerged on the independent circuit in the early 2000s under the pseudonym Le Luci della Centrale Elettrica. A minstrel capable of evoking deep, torn and tearing atmospheres. A niche artist and faithful to the niche. There is no question of quality but, in fact, a niche proposal for an arena with 1,300 to 5,000 seats is a gamble. Without a doubt Brondi would have been a musician to be at the court of the Mole. On July 5th the Super Taranta collective will take to the stage of the arena, bringing together the best-known personalities of Salento pizzica. Better known in Salento, certainly. Followed by the DJ set Febbre a ’90, the party dedicated to the best of nineties music. On July 6th it will be Malika Ayane’s turn in concert. The artist, however, is not currently on tour. And she doesn’t have a record out. The last one was three years ago. At the end of the show the famous voice of Skunk Anansie, Skin, will perform an electronic music DJ set. Not exactly new for Ancona, in fact the artist was already a guest at the Sui nightclub in Marina Dorica 10 years ago, always with her DJ set.

The addition

The summer of the maxi arena at the port could have ended here, but luckily another show has come to an end. That of the Tuscan actress Chiara Francini. “Forte e Chiara”, this is the name of the show, will be staged on 13 July. However, this show is not a real novelty either. It was already scheduled at the Teatro Gentile in Fabriano on 11 October, then from 12 to 15 October at the Rossini in Pesaro, on 9 January this year it stopped at the Teatro La Nuova Fenice in Osimo and then reached the south of the Marche between the second part of January and May: Fermo, Corridonia, Ascoli. A 5,000-seat arena for shows previously offered in theaters with 400 to 800 seats. It goes without saying that, at least for this summer, the incoming effect from shows will be ignored. And a fact is that there will be no big names. For those you will have to go out of town. North or south of Ancona you are spoiled for choice.

The lengths

The problem of bureaucratic delays that kept the arena tied up until the last minute made the big promoters run away. For them, planning times travel months ahead. So, all around the area is dotted with events and concerts that are filling the hotels. Ancona will have to settle for a summer full of local cover bands. What fun, though, in the neighborhoods. Like in the 90s.
