Emilia-Romagna is growing in third-party logistics

Recent years have marked a significant evolution in the third-party logistics sector in Italy, with economic growth particularly affecting Emilia Romagna. In fact, in 2023, the logistics market in this region had a turnover of 10.9 billion euros, recording an increase of 5.7% compared to the previous year. Considering a broader time frame, the region’s growth appears more relevant: turnover went from 7.6 billion euros in 2018 to 10.9 billion euros in 2023. This notable increase is higher than the national average, making the region a point of reference in the sector. Emilia Romagna alone represents 9% of the national turnover of third-party logistics, with over 400 dedicated properties and a further 500 thousand square meters under construction.

These data emerge from the conference “Strategy, innovation and sustainability: the future of logistics”, organized by the “Gino Marchet” Contract Logistics Observatory of the Polytechnic of Milan. The event took place on 18 June 2024 at the Kerakoll GreenLab in Sassuolo. Damiano Frosi, director of the Contract Logistics Observatory, explains that: “the numbers show a constantly growing logistics supply chain and the regions involved in the conference see logistics services as an engine for the economic growth of the territory, combined with environmental and social sustainability”.

During the meeting, the Observatory also provided the national logistics panorama, which has shown continuous growth, going from 7.2% of GDP in 2019 to 8.9% in 2022. The value of the sector increased from 119 billion euros in 2019 to 157 billion in 2022. The logistics sector third party logistics, in particular, has recorded an almost uninterrupted increase since 2009, exceeding 114 billion euros in 2022. The regions of Northern Italy – among which Emilia Romagna, Veneto and Lombardy stand out – account for 53% of third party logistics turnover in Italy. These regions are also home to 35% of logistics service provider companies organized as joint-stock companies.
