Following checks on the stability and health of the plants carried out through visual and instrumental analyses, as part of the tree heritage control plan implemented by the Municipality of Modena, eight trees, mostly poplars, will be removed in various areas of the city.

The felling is carried out to protect the safety of citizens since the plants, partly located near cycle paths or parks, were found to be dry or at risk of crashing due to problems and diseases which irremediably compromise their stability.

The intervention is starting within the week and will continue in the following weeks by the Giovetti company and with the coordination of the technicians of the Municipality’s Urban Maintenance service.

In the Peep area of Stravello Romano, a completely dry cypress poplar tree will be felled which is located at the side of a pedestrian path and close to the play area, while at the Peep Nonantolana two trees will be removed: a dry cypress poplar tree, also in this case located next to the pedestrian path, and a dry oak close to the play area.

In the green area in the Via Indipendenza area, a hybrid black poplar leaning towards the cycle path will be removed which has deep decay at the collar (the area between the root and the trunk). The instrumental analysis has revealed that the remaining healthy wood is not sufficient to guarantee the stability of the plant.

In via Miglioli, the intervention concerns a black poplar tree affected by deep decay and necrosis which cause serious anomalies and pose a risk of collapse.

At the Respighi park, the stability investigation made it possible to identify a white poplar with an extensive wound with decay deepening in the trunk which causes a cavity in the central cylinder which leads the plant to progressive deterioration, therefore requiring its removal.

In Minutara road, a leaning black poplar tree with an unbalanced crown will be felled which has suffered significant damage to the root system due to the need to urgently intervene on the underground utilities.

Finally, at the Benedetto Marcello park, a Canadian poplar tree will be removed, suffering from extensive cavities with decay that has already destructured the internal tissues, leaving an insufficient thickness of wood to guarantee the stability of the plant.
