CORIGLIANO-ROSSANO – On Saturday 15 June, in the “Sala Giovanni Sapia” of Palazzo San Bernardino, an interesting conference was held organized by the Rossano “Bisantium” and Corigliano Rossano “Sybaris” Rotary Clubs with the patronage of District 2102, entitled ” Middle Ages Unknown”.

The two Presidents, Grazia Beraldo and Adriano Natale Viteritti, opened the proceedings with institutional greetings, followed by the speech of the first collaborator of the school director of the high school campus, professor Iolanda Barone, who underlined the many years of synergy and collaboration with Rotary . The coordinator of the project, Salvatore Foti, presented the aims of the initiative, aimed at promoting the cultural development of the territory in the medieval period, through the publication of the book “Middle Ages Unknown landscapes, history, monuments and archeology of central Jonica Calabria”.

The text on the thousand-year history of the period analyzed in the Calabrian Ionian Sea, recounts a historical phase often considered in a negative sense, and unknown to the public. He himself stated that high-profile experts were involved in the drafting of the work and that the thousand printed copies of the book will be donated to the Public Administration, Museums and Local and Ecclesiastical Bodies and to deserving Associations. This was followed by timely dissertations by the illustrious speakers. The introductory discussion of the topic and the presentation of the various parts of the text was entrusted to Gregorio Aversa, Director of the Archaeological Museum of Crotone, with the historical and topographical framework of the project and the illustration of some of the most significant testimonies of the medieval period In Calabria.

The discussion of the topic continued with the Past Governor, Professor Alfredo Focà, professor of Microbiology and History of Medicine at the Magna Graecia University, with his speech entitled “Dissertation on Bruno di Longobucco and the culture of books”. The professor illustrated to those present the study on the Calabrian doctor, unknown to most, and who distinguished himself during the medieval period for the innovations he brought to the medical field, becoming a professor of surgery in the Universities of Padua and Verona. The architect Antonio Aprelino discussed the “discovery of an ancient painting depicting the medieval walls of Corigliano”, proposing a new and interesting study.

Concluding the reports was Professor Grazia Beraldo who presented the dissemination of the “Unknown Middle Ages” Pcto Project in the Rossano area high school complex, presenting its organization and purposes, thus transferring, the teacher stated, the knowledge acquired in the theoretical lessons on the Google Earth platform, creating a virtual map, QR codes to be placed near the monuments and information leaflets on the monuments analysed. She recalled another Rotary project in collaboration with the “Excellence Summer Stage 24” institute, informing those present that for the second consecutive year, a student from the high school campus has been selected and will benefit from a summer scholarship in Bern , offered by 8 Rotary clubs, including the Rossano “Bisantium”, where he will carry out an internship at the High Energy Physics Laboratory (Lhep) lasting 8 weeks. Finally, the speeches of the students of the high school campus followed: Irene Talerico, Simone Pace and Nilo Sapia who exhibited the multimedia products developed during the PCTO.

The high-profile reports were followed by institutional greetings from Governor Dino De Marco, who expressed his appreciation and enthusiasm for the discussion of the interesting topic and satisfaction with the cultural ferment present in District 2102 and who intends to continue the project during the year of his Governorship. The event was concluded by the Governor’s assistant, Sonia Falcone, who praised the project and the extensive reports.
