A press conference to present the new Center for Studies on Health, Society and Territory of the University of Calabria will be held on Tuesday 25 June at 5pm at the Casa delle Culture in Cosenza. The Center will represent the largest interdepartmental research structure hosted by the university, involving nine of its departments: the department of political and social sciences (leader), the department of computer engineering, modeling, electronics and systems engineering; The
department of mechanical, energy and management engineering; the department of economics, statistics and finance; the Department of Pharmacy and Health and Nutrition Sciences; the department of mathematics and computer science; the Department of Cultures, Education and Society; the environmental engineering department; the department of biology, ecology and earth sciences.

In the public debate on Calabria, the topic of healthcare frequently returns. Health and healthcare, however, are not synonymous. The objective of the CST is to reflect and produce research around the theme of health, understood as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not simply the absence of disease and infirmity, as recalled by the World Health Organization. But what determines this well-being? Its determinants are multiple: biological, genetic, but also social, economic and environmental. From this perspective, therefore, to respond to health needs and extend social well-being, it is not sufficient to think only in terms of the supply of beds in hospital facilities or specialist services.

The various scientific skills that animate the Center will work exactly in this direction: questioning how to intervene to improve individual and community health and well-being and promote the culture of adopting public policies based on scientific evidence. Two of the three missions that Unical has, like every university, will converge in this ambitious objective: producing research and returning the fruits of the process to citizens
scientific by disseminating the knowledge acquired around the topics studied.

The inaugural press conference will be an opportunity to launch the dissemination work of the CST by presenting the results of recent studies, which use data on Calabria developed by the center’s members to explore issues of great relevance for the region. The results of research will be presented on the effects of health technologies, digital services and the processing of complex data for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, the role of nutrition and lifestyles on physical health and longevity, services of mental health in Calabria and studies on the psychological well-being of children and adults, and studies on the effects of environmental disasters on the health of the Calabrian population and on the effects of territorial policies on the social well-being of communities.
