PALERMO – Two entrepreneurs under house arrestthree obligations to report to the barracks for drivers and employees of a company in Bagheria, a land of 10 thousand square meters seized.
These are the numbers of the raid by the Carabinieri of the Bagheria company. The judge for preliminary investigations of the Court accepted the request of the Palermo District Anti-Mafia Directorate. The investigation would have revealed the existence of illicit waste trafficking.
Landfill for nearby construction sites
The police monitored the period December 2022-February 2023. The company was supposed to deal with construction and transport of non-hazardous special waste. And instead on the land he owned he would have organized a landfill welcoming and burying waste materials from various construction sites open in Bagheria and surrounding areas.
They have been documented at least 280 discharges of factory cleaners, with an average of seven per day carried out without interruption, for a total of approximately 1,400 tons of inert material.
Earnings of 15 thousand euros per month
The cost required by the company to dispose of each single load ranged from 70 to 100 euros per an earnings of around 15,000 euros per month. The system would have allowed construction site owners to reduce costs and not pay disposal fees.
Investigators speak of “destruction of agricultural land” subjected to landscape and seismic constraints and considered unstable. Instead of vineyards, waste was accumulated.
Once covered with earth, other saplings would be planted. A “clumsy attempt to hide illicit trafficking”the investigators add.
Land and vehicles of the boss
The land and heavy vehicles used (seven trucks and two excavators)based on the investigations of the Carabinieri of the Palermo Investigative Unit, had already been seized by the Court in 2022 because they were considered to be available for Nicolò Testa, convicted of mafia and died last November 7th.
