handshakes and hugs ahead of the ballot

Handshakes, hugs and pats on the back with councilors Maurizio Petracca and Enzo Alaia. A quick greeting at the entrance to the bus station and a very close exchange lasting a minute or so while leaves the structure with Antonio Gengaro. Conveyed, in advance, by Lello De Stefano, who, as a consummate diplomat, took on the role of mediator between the governor and the aspiring mayor of Avellino in the Schlein area, not entirely appreciated by the number one in Palazzo Santa Lucia.

If anyone, on the eve, had imagined that the visit of the president of the regional council to Avellino was a mere electoral catwalk, they had to think again. Also because, due to the times in which it took place and the busy schedule to be respected, there wasn’t even the opportunity.

To the reporters who asked him your opinion on the run-off with Laura Nargi, De Luca first responds “Good luck”. And then, when asked for a prediction, he brings out one of his warhorses: «Never make predictions, he says – that they bring dry». On this topic, in short, a certain coldness, which goes hand in hand with that shown before the vote on 8 and 9 June by his deputy, Fulvio Bonavitacola. The Environment Councilor, invited to the Irpinia headquarters of the Democratic Party for a meeting on water, parks, waste and sustainability in Irpinia, limited himself to a greeting, respecting the provisions of the program. The situation repeats itself, therefore, after a couple of weeks.

For De Luca, was it a choice due to his institutional role or the desire to mark a certain distance? It is not entirely clear but it is certain that on other issues concerning the Region’s activity and political decisions on actions and investments, the governor spoke about politics with his usual direct language. «We have renovated the hospital in Ariano Irpino – he recalled – soon the one in Solofra will also be beautiful and we will inaugurate it. But we have also made investments for Moscati which is a national excellence in oncology. Funds also went to Lioni-Grotta and the most beautiful bus station in Campania, that of Avellino, recipient of important resources. We are the government of the entire region, not just the coastal strip and the metropolitan area of Naples.”

Having finished the overview of what has been done in the province, here is the attack on the Government, on Minister Fitto and on Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni: «For a year We await the release of development and cohesion funds. Fitto said that timing is not the problem, perhaps they didn’t explain to him that a year lost ago implies an increase in the cost of the works by a third. Let’s get one thing in mind: Campania will not accept blackmail. Never”.
Then he recalls the ruling of the Council of State which obliges the Government to sign the agreement by 28 June. «I am not optimistic – the governor underlined – “these” have a different conception of democracy and rules».

Hence the excursus on the precedents that characterized, in his opinion, the relationship with Palazzo Chigi, in his “crusade” against Differentiated Autonomy and, indeed, the unblocking of cohesion funds. «In Rome last February he says – There were many of us demonstrating for the release of funds and against this disaster of the reform on differentiated autonomy. To stop us and prevent us from reaching the square, they sent the police to recognize the mayors on the buses. As if they were terrorists. Then they continued with their methods with those who demonstrated. Baton beatings on students and, very recently, a squad attack in Parliament on a member of the Five Star Movement who was holding the tricolour. In the meantime, we are fighting for the development of the territory. We will continue to do so with our heads held high.”
