Investigations continue into the murder of Marco and Claudio Marrandino, the 40 and 29 year old brothers, killed in Orta di Atella (in the Caserta area) on Saturday afternoon. Under accusation is a 53-year-old man – AM – who continues to say he is innocent but who, according to what has emerged so far, also pointed the gun at the police before attempting to escape. Let’s take a step back and see what we know and what still needs to be clarified.

Marco Marrandino, a lawyer, had been president of the municipal council, elected with a civic list, while his brother was an entrepreneur in the construction sector. The murder of the brothers Marco and Claudio Marrandino occurred on Saturday shortly after 2pm at the exit of the Asse Mediano between Succivo and Orta di Atella at the exit of Succivo.

The moments of the attack can be seen in a video. The two victims were traveling in a white BMW, which stopped. A gray car arrives. At that moment the two cars come alongside as if the occupants were exchanging a few words. Then a person gets out of the gray car and starts shooting. The attacker first aims at Claudio, hit several times, then at Marco who tries to escape but is hit in the back.

In the first interrogation on Saturday, the suspect said he knew nothing and that his car had been robbed, which is why he had gone to hospital. Something doesn’t add up in the story. The police arrived at the scene of the murder when the attack was underway. The soldiers who intervened saw the man who shot.

A patrol, engaged in an ordinary territorial control service, noticed two stopped cars while passing by, the occupants of which were arguing with each other, apparently due to an argument related to traffic issues. At that point, the patrol leader approached. According to what was reconstructed by the carabinieri, after killing the Marrandino brothers, the suspect also pointed the weapon at the soldier. The latter then fired two gun shots himself, without however hitting the attacker. The man fled and during the chase he also threw pieces of glass from the window of his car, damaging the carabinieri’s car. He was tracked down shortly afterwards, in a health facility in the area, and arrested.

The car used for the escape was found abandoned in a rural area not far from the clinic. During the house search, homemade weapons and ammunition were found, including a modified sawn-off shotgun with abraded serial number and an illegally possessed semi-automatic pistol, not registered in the database and not the subject of a complaint, and a large quantity of material for packaging cartridges and gunpowder (over 100 kilograms of cartridge cases). The 53-year-old has previously been the recipient of administrative measures banning the possession of weapons and revoking his gun licence; consequently the weapons held are to be considered clandestine.

Why Marco and Claudio Marrandino were killed

The motive remains a mystery. An act of impetus? A crime linked to a sale in a judicial auction? No lead is excluded and the fact that the double murder occurred a few days after the arrest of Emanuele Libero Schiavone, son of the repentant clan leader Francesco, is also taken into account, and that in recent days, in the Caserta area, several violent episodes have occurred, raid with dozens of shots fired also against the house of the Schiavone family in Casal di Principe, in the imminence, among other things, of the electoral round.
