RISK OF DROUGHT AND BELOW AVERAGE LAKES IN THE CENTRE, THE MOST SERIOUS SITUATION IN ABRUZZO

Central Italy is in the grip of drought like the South, with the most serious situation in Abruzzo. The Anbi Observatory on water resources writes it. In Abruzzo, after a winter with little snow in the Apennines and a spring with little rain, the risk of drought is evident. From the Teatro hills to the Pescara coast, from Val Pescara to the border with Marche, rainfall in the hydrological year is at its lowest. Rationing has begun in Valle Peligna. The Penne reservoir in the province of Pescara contains 3 million cubic metres, compared to the average of 8. In the absence of significant rainfall, there will be no water for the countryside as early as July. In the Marche, what is worrying is the condition of extreme drought in which, after more than a year of scarce rainfall, some coastal municipalities in Pesaro and the southern territories on the border with Abruzzo. In Lazio, river flows are affected by the lack of contributions generated by the melting of snow at high altitude (in the Tiber basin: -30% in spring, -76% in winter) and by the rainfall deficit (in Rome in 2024 it rained 16% in less than the average of the recent decade). The flow in the center of Rome is 50% of normal. The condition of the Lazio lakes remains dramatic. Same problems for Trasimeno, which has been in constant decline for over a year. Umbria also suffers from a lack of rainfall: in May it was more than 25% lower than average. Among the central regions, the best condition is that of Tuscany. Here, however, the flows of the Arno, Ombrone and Serchio rivers have fallen below average. (HANDLE).
