CATANZARO “The news of the migrants – it seems there are between 50 and 60 people – missing due to the capsizing of the boat in which they were traveling about a hundred miles off the Calabrian coast is a punch in the stomach. What we are experiencing are hours of great anguish for the entire Region, hours that bring to mind the enormous drama we experienced in Cutro just over a year ago. I thank the rescuers who promptly supported the survivors who arrived in Roccella Jonica, and I pray for the woman who tragically died in an attempt to save herself. The Turkish route, from which these migrants appear to have arrived, has too often been underestimated in recent years. Instead, greater attention from Europe and national governments is needed. Our seas should shine with life and hope, and not periodically transform into immense cemeteries.” Thus Roberto Occhiuto, president of the Calabria Region.
Mancuso’s condolences
“I am deeply saddened and concerned by the tragedy that occurred off the coast of Calabria, where around fifty migrants are missing following the capsizing of their boat. I express the condolences of the Regional Council of Calabria for the victims and solidarity with the survivors who will not fail to provide maximum assistance. In addition to the attention repeatedly assured in every institutional setting, it is urgent for the European Union to intervene quickly and decisively to prevent tragedies in the Mediterranean. We ask, especially after the dramatic shipwreck of Steccato di Cutro,
decisive and multi-pronged action, including greater collaboration between Member States to strengthen controls and rescue operations, as well as effective measures to combat human trafficking. Calabria and Italy cannot be left alone to face these humanitarian emergencies” said the president of the regional council Filippo Mancuso.
