Fourteen new mayors and 4 councilors in Bergamo: the under-35s in politics

The group of under-35 mayors in the Bergamo area is growing: in the last elections, out of 17 candidates for the office of mayor, well 14 they managed to wear the tricolor sash. Therefore, out of the 164 towns called to the polls, as many as 8.5% chose to entrust the leadership of the municipality to one of their young fellow citizens.

The youngest is Edoardo Bertuletti – 25 years – new mayor of Susio, taking a lead that until now belonged to the outgoing mayor of Onore, Michele Schiavi, now regional councilor.

Besides him they were elected Daniele Esposito (34 years old, Albino), Maria Cristina Galizzi (34 years old, Brusaporto), Saul Ronzoni (27 years old, Chignolo d’Isola), Ivan Rossoni (29 years old, Comun Novo), Ivan Mario Tassi (29 years old, Misano di Gera d’Adda), Luca Colleoni (29 years old, Osio Sopra), Francesco Zanotti (26 years old, Piario), Davide Cantu (27 years old, Pontida) e Valentina Ceruti (34 years old, Villa d’Almé).

They were also confirmed for a second term Andrea Locatelli (34 years old, Camerata Cornello), Gabriele Zappella (30 years old, Monasterolo del Castello), Ilaria Rovelli (31 years old, Roncobello) e Manuel Rossi (33 years old, Saint Bridget).

They didn’t make it Lorenzo Rota (19 years old, the youngest in the race, from Ambivere), Stefano Nozza (24 years old, Grassobbio) e Roberto Filisetti (24 years old, Gorle).

Making a comparison with the electoral round of 12 June 2022, then combined with judicial referendums, the percentage of new young first citizens drops from 17% to the aforementioned 8.5% although it should be specified that at the time there were only 17 municipalities called to vote. And even if Rota, Nozza and Filisetti had been elected, the figure could have risen to a maximum of 10.3%.

Overall, the group of under-35 mayors in the Bergamo province drops by one, from 18 to 17out of 243 municipalities, for 6.9% total. The 14 newly elected mayors must be added Fabio Carminati (35 years old, mayor of Fornovo San Giovanni), Luca Giovanni Pendezza (32 years old, mayor of Villa d’Ogna) e Francesco Michieli (33 years old, mayor of Villongo).

The re-election of Rovelli, combined with the affirmations of Galizzi and Ceruti, bring the number of first female citizens under 35 to 3. Once one unit has been lost in this case too, the percentage of the total number of local administrators in Bergamo drops from 1.64% to1.23%. Not counting the personal data, the number of female mayors in the Bergamo area is still low: 34 out of 243 municipalities for the 13.9%.

Bergamo city councilors under-35

There are four young councilors who will sit at Palazzo Frizzoni in the next five years. In the majority we find Alessandro De Bernardis And Marco Previtali. De Bernardis (29 years old) is the city secretary of the Democratic Party and received 353 preferences. Marco Previtali, at 27 years old, will be the youngest councilor of the next legislature. Candidate with the Democratic Party, he was elected with 237 preferences.

He could also take over Laura Brevi, 26 years old, who received 324 preferences for Futura-Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra. Her candidacy for city councilor was supported by the #FacciamoEleggere project Inequality and Diversity Forumwhich supported grassroots candidacies from activists pursuing social and environmental justice battles.

There are two under-35 members of the minority. Giulia Ceci (31 years old), elected on the Forza Italia – Noi Moderati – PPE list with 447 preferences, obtained the best result of the entire centre-right coalition that supported the mayoral candidate Andrea Pezzotta. With 338 preferences he was also elected Arrigo Tremaglia (30 years old), president of Gioventù Nazionale Bergamo and candidate for Fratelli d’Italia.
