the rescue operations and the rush to the hospital

VENICE – Overwhelmed by mud inside an archaeological site. The request for help went off at 11.45am today, Monday 17 June. An operator was working inside the excavation area in Punta San Giuliano to Mestre when he was overwhelmed by a mud detachment.

Firefighters rushed to the scene from Venice with two lagoon fire engines and with divers arriving both from Mestre and transported by helicopter from Drago 149, who lowered themselves onto the site and freed the man who remained conscious from the mud.

The rescue

The injured man was taken care of by Suem medical staff and transferred to hospital with a water ambulance. Spisal staff and local police are on site.

The firefighters’ rescue operations ended after about an hour.

Zaia’s comment

«The timely and punctual intervention of our rescuers allowed us to avoid mourning another death at work today. For this reason I want to publicly thank the team of firefighters, divers, rescuers of Suem 118 and the water ambulance of Ulss 3 Veneziana who first extracted and then saved a man who was working in front of the Venetian lagoon, busy in an excavation in an archaeological area”.

The president of the Veneto Region declared this after learning of the rescue operation which allowed a worker injured due to a mudslide in an archaeological excavation in the San Giuliano area, in Mestre, to be transported to hospital.

«The plague of accidents at work remains – he concludes – a serious problem on which the Veneto Region continues to work from a preventative perspective but which requires effort and broad reflection at all levels».
