The farmers’ protests are “legitimate”, but “blocking Salerno with tractors is not a method I agree with”. The president of Coldiretti Salerno, Ettore Bellelli, wrote this in a note. “The farmers’ battle is the battle that Coldiretti has been carrying on for years and which has allowed us to maintain, unlike our German or French colleagues, agricultural diesel and preferential taxation, and has led Italy, for example, first to legislate to stop synthetic meat with a subscription that involved thousands of citizens. There are problems and it is indisputable, but the organization demands proposals, not protests.”
Throughout Campania, Coldiretti has launched a busy calendar of meetings: on the agenda is the discussion on the topic of the so-called “tractors” and the demonstrations of recent days, listening to the requests of the operators but also the definition of an action strategy together with the partners. This is a process that will lead to listening to thousands of participating agricultural businesses.
“The results are achieved by demonstrating the ability to dialogue with the Region, local authorities, the Presidency of the Council, the Minister of Agriculture and the European Union, regardless of the political color of those who sit in the buildings; the demands made today by these movements are, in reality, the battles to which we are already guaranteeing solutions.
The direction taken by Europe in the agricultural field is questionable, but the proposals must be presented on institutional tables, not in places too far from Brussels. Already on February 26th we will be in Brussels together with thousands of farmers to ask for a profound revision of the CAP, which looks more at production than at blind environmentalism which would relegate farmers to guardians of nature rather than entrepreneurs who must produce food”.
