The Paduan volunteers of the Drug Free World association are intensifying their information and prevention initiatives
PADUA – On the occasion of the International Day against the Abuse and Illicit Trafficking of Narcotic Substances, proclaimed by the United Nations, the volunteers of the association Drug Free World of Padua have launched a new information and prevention initiative aimed at traders and citizens.
The association’s volunteers are deeply convinced that “the most effective weapon in the war against drugs is education,” as humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard wrote. With this philosophy, in recent months they have distributed free information brochures in various areas of Padua.
The series of booklets, entitled “The Truth About Drugs”, consists of 14 installments, each dedicated to a specific type of narcotic substance. Each booklet describes in detail the street names, the chemical composition, the short and long term effects of the substances, also including personal testimonies.
The project began in the Arcella neighborhood, where volunteers spoke directly with residents and shopkeepers, leaving them brochures. Subsequently, the initiative was extended to the neighborhoods of Pontevigodarzere and Cadoneghe. Awareness-raising activities were also organized in Piazzale Stazione and in the historic centre. Recently, volunteers returned to Via Facciolati to further distribute the material in shops and among residents.
The drug problem cannot be considered as one problem among many, since its use and abuse affects all social levels. Students combining alcohol and marijuana, teenagers experimenting with heroin, cocaine or ecstasy, neighbors and colleagues facing difficulties related to drug or alcohol addiction: the phenomenon permeates every aspect of society. European Community surveys indicate that drugs and crime are among the main concerns of communities. For this reason, Drug-Free World has continued to promote prevention and correct information for over 10 years.
