Salerno is in shock due to the sudden collapse of a wing of building building, one of the historic buildings in the city centre, built in the 1920s in late Art Nouveau style. It all happens at night and fortunately the vertical affected by the failure does not include it bedrooms. Otherwise the victims would have also been added to the structural damage: the building is in fact inhabited by about 50 people. The cause of the accident is attributed to the weakening of one of the supporting pillars following some renovation works in the bar facing the street, on the Lungomare side. But there is a battle between the experts on this. The static consolidation works last approximately a year and a half in total and involve the closure of a small stretch of the Trieste seafront.
However, this does not deter those from outside Salerno who linger nearby, attracted by the media hype surrounding the collapse. Thus one takes hold disturbing form of tourism which focuses on rubble and chipped walls. The closed stretch of seafront is reopened on March 15, 2008 while the eviction order was revoked just before Christmas. From a judicial point of view, the trial ends after many years in a stalemate: the monocratic court of Naples acquits in July 2022, after a long series of postponements, incompatibilities and exceptionsall 15 accused because the fact does not exist.
