AGI – At the age of 92, she passed away yesterday Ada Battistini, one of the last survivors of the Nazi-fascist massacre in Sant’Anna di Stazzemain Versilia, and witness in the La Spezia trial which saw ten SS hierarchs sentenced to life imprisonment. He was thirteen years old on 12 August 1944, when the Nazi-fascists killed in the village of Sant’Anna di Stazzema 560 women, elderly people and children: she was spared along with others by a young German soldier, who shot elsewhere, at sheep, and not at civilians.

But on that day he lost his father, who was killed during the descent towards Valdicastello, and many other family members. Ada Battistini lived in Sant’Anna. After the massacre she continued to live there until in 1958 she went to live in Strettoia where she remained for her entire life with her husband Cesare Cinquini. She leaves behind two children, Franco and Maria Pia.

“He was a very good person – remembers his son-in-law Vittorio Tommasi – who dedicated his whole life to his family and to Sant’Anna di Stazzema, because when he could and in the summer he was always in his home in Sant’Anna. Ada had in fact taken care of also of his brother, taking care of him for a long time”. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday 17 June at 3 pm in the Strettoia church.
