G7, the main road to politics from the Pope

The reflection on the centrality of politics in the face of the global issues of our time, which Pope francesco he carried out in the final part of his extraordinary speech at the G7, it is stuff that will make the veins in the wrists of anyone who exercises a political commitment tremble, whatever its form or level of responsibility.

The Pope’s warning

Personally I sense at the same time the total inadequacy and the tenacious attraction towards the ideal path so clearly traced by the Popewho wanted to remind us that “in the face of so many petty forms of politics aimed at immediate interests…political greatness is shown when, in difficult moments, one operates on the basis of great principles and thinking of the long-term common good”.

The task of politics

Politics that renounces this breathing space dies because it fails to fulfill its proper role, not only in the international context but also in the national and local context, reducing itself to a mere exercise of power with a humanly corrosive character.

Precisely my personal story, full of many errors as well as a sincere passion for service in favor of the common good that has never failed, not even within the prison walls, encourages me to share these feelingsespecially with the many young people and women of the new Christian Democracy who today materialize its political proposal in society and institutions.

De Gasperi’s words

“A politician thinks about the next elections, a statesman about the next generations”said De Gasperi.
An apparently difficult program for a policy that often seems to be able to live only under the banner of an all-encompassing pragmatism. Yet it is a perspective that is necessary today more than ever to meet the many ethical, social and economic challenges that we face at all levels.

If not the risk would be to make the fracture already underway between the participatory and popular dimension of democracy and the functioning of the institutions themselves irremediablesignaled with alarming clarity by the growing threshold of abstentionism which, for years now, has characterized every electoral consultation.

Finally I think it is necessary to express a grateful appreciation to our Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for the bold political foresight implemented in making Pope Francis’ participation in the G7 possible.
