Trento, new attack in prison: two policemen in hospital. Boom in cases in the Triveneto: over 100 officers injured

Another case of assault on an officer in prison, this time in Trento and fortunately without serious consequences. But the increase in these episodes throughout the Triveneto is becoming worrying

The attack in Gardolo prison

«In the prison of Spini di Gardolo in Trento – explains Massimiliano Rosa, Trentino provincial secretary of Sappe, the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union – yesterday afternoon a prisoner of Italian origin he suddenly attacked first a prison policeman, hitting him with slaps in the face, and then also a second colleague, who intervened to help the first, again with slaps and punches in the face. The inmate demanded, without reason and without authorization, to be moved from one cell, refusing to enter the one in which he was confined. Altered, he treacherously lashed out at the policeman, first pushing him and then hitting him violently in the face and neck. Having seen the event, a second colleague intervened to help the unfortunate man but the prisoner, with unprecedented violence, lashed out at the second colleague, hitting him with slaps, punches and pushes”.

Two policemen at the hospital

The physical consequences reported by the two officers were immediate. The two prison officers were then accompanied to the Santa Chiara hospital of Trento for the necessary treatment following the injuries suffered: both were certified with a 7-day prognosis and collars were applied to their necks, adds Sappe, who “expresses closeness, solidarity and wishes his colleagues a speedy recovery”. Donato Capece, general secretary of the Sappe, calls for immediate interventions: “We must act quickly to protect the prison officers, the pride not only of the Sappe and of the entire Corps but of the entire nation.”

Boom in cases in the Triveneto

«In the Triveneto penitentiary district – highlights Capece – the figures are alarming. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, a multitude of critical events were recorded between prison bars: 257 resistances and insults, 14 noisy collective protests with beatings, 13 refusals to return to cells. As many as 101 policemen were injured with a prognosis of up to 7 days, 3 of which with a prognosis of over 20 days”. He then returns to urge “urgent measures”, starting with “a tightening of sentences for prisoners who attack Penitentiary Police personnel during their stay and serving their sentences in prison”.
