fights and malamovida are just a memory

Tranquility has returned to reign in Via Bergamo. Even in the evening, even on weekends. Goodbye to nocturnal noise, acts of vandalism, fights and those violent events that for years had marked the summer evenings and weekends of those who live in the village of bars and restaurants. Residents exasperated by so-called bad nightlife situations who constantly telephoned the police; citizens who in the morning slalomed among the remains of evenings of revelry.

The rebirth of the village

Now the situation has improved and to talk about it MonzaToday is Riccardo Zakian, restaurateur of the street and deputy coordinator of the San Gerardo consultation. “Managing via Bergamo is not easy. It is not easy to reconcile the many different needs of those who live on the street and those who work on the street. But we did it, thanks to a working group with the Municipality, traders, residents and the council. In terms of safety there have been very important results: also thanks to the strict control work of the police forces, those incidents that were in the news every weekend no longer occur.”

But what determined the rebirth of the nightlife village was not only a greater passage of currencies, but also some commercial changes. “Some businesses have lowered the shutters and whoever took over has embraced the ethical work that we restaurateurs and shopkeepers in the street are carrying out”. Meanwhile, starting tomorrow, Monday 17 June, an important construction site will begin in via Bergamo.

How the path changes

What is affected is the final stretch of the road, from number 28 and number 32F and to the intersection with via Canova. With relative closure of the road to vehicular traffic starting from Monday 17 June until the end of the works scheduled for 31 August. The works involve the renovation of roads and sidewalks over an area of approximately 685 square meters. “The first phase will consist of the removal of the surface layer of asphalt, the filling material and approximately 25 cm of gravel which constitutes the road base – the Municipality states -. The road pavement will therefore be redone by lowering the road, which is currently at the same level as the pavement, to conform to the already renovated section. This will also involve modifying the slopes and moving the drains. Furthermore, the manholes will be repositioned at high altitude and grids will be created for the planting of new species, maintaining the tree variety already present. For the new flooring, porphyry and serizzo slabs will be used and finally a pedestrian crossing will be created in continuity with the passages already created in the previous section”.

How traffic changes

The intervention will cost almost 233 thousand euros (to be precise 232,868.66 euros) and is being carried out as part of an ongoing agreement at the care and expense of the operator. Naturally, with the blockade of traffic there will be no shortage of inconveniences. Only residents’ vehicles destined for the driveways present in the section and emergency and rescue vehicles will be able to access, with the help of traffic personnel during the hours of presence on the construction site. In the section, which is effectively dead-end, in derogation of the regulations in force, two-way traffic will be established starting from the aforementioned intersections up to the construction site area. Furthermore, due to the works, the antiques market scheduled for June 23rd will take place on October 27th. “The intervention – states the councilor for Public Works Marco Lamperti – will allow us to restore the face it deserves to via Bergamo, one of the main streets of the urban structure of Monza both for its historical importance and for its function as a real village outside the city”.
