Vittorino Checchia, the 71-year-old accused of being an accomplice to the murderer of Franca Marasco, the tobacconist killed in via Marchese De Rosa on 28 August 2023, died yesterday morning. Checchia was arrested on 14 September in Foggia, believed to be the accomplice of Moslli Redouane , the man confessed to the murder. He had been hospitalized at the Policlinico Riuniti for about ten days, guarded by the Penitentiary Police. He has always denied every accusation.

The violent robbery that shook the entire community occurred on the morning of August 28th. The victim was alone in the shop when a man armed with a knife burst in. Four blows inflicted by the robber were fatal to the woman, two to the abdomen and two to the neck. The man, after abandoning the murder weapon, walked away taking away 75 euros and two central telephones. He was stopped on September 2nd at the Naples station.

According to what is reported in the precautionary order, on the afternoon of the day preceding the robbery, Checchia and Redouane were filmed by the cameras of a bar drinking a beer and chatting. On the morning of the robbery, the 70-year-old allegedly provided him with gloves, a mask and a knife, found in a rigid white envelope inside the tobacconist. Furthermore, Redouane, to the investigating judge, claimed to have shared the loot with him, at Renu’s home, on the same day of the robbery. A few days later the alleged accomplice contacted the perpetrator of the murder, informing him that the woman was dead and, therefore, advising him to escape.

As reported by the Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno, Checchia had discovered in prison that he was ill. His condition has worsened recently, requiring hospitalization.
