After the sit in in San Felice, there was also a demonstration in Modena for Anna, strangled by her husband with a belt and a rope, the doctor from San Felice sul Panaro left her body in the trunk and was thus taken to the Carabinieri barracks. She had just arrived home to pick up her children, aged 3 and 5, and take them to the beach.

«We are tired of counting all these feminicides. Patriarchal culture must be overthrown » is the message that also rose from the square in Modena, where many citizens were there to testify their closeness to Anna’s family, to her children. “This is a plague that is dramatically affecting the entire country and if we don’t all do our part, especially men, we won’t go anywhere. There is still a concept of ownership of women and children and this is a something that must be fought from a cultural and legal point of view. The rules are not sufficient”, said the mayor of Modena Massimo Mezzetti.

Aurora Ferrari, confederal secretariat of the CGIL, recalled that «This is the 19th femicide since the beginning of the year that we have recorded helplessly: we don’t want to solve the problem at its root. Steps forward, from a regulatory point of view, have been made but interventions in schools, starting from childhood as well as in the workplace, must be strengthened. We need education on sexuality, affectivity and respect for women in particular, expanding protection for women victims of violence and providing seminars with people in the profession. We find ourselves faced with yet another legacy of patriarchal culture which, in the face of separation, does not tolerate women’s right to self-determination for their own freedom.”

The demonstration in Modena took place on Saturday afternoon in Piazza Torre, from 5pm to 7pm, organized by the Women’s Conference of the Democratic Party. And the protest continues: the Women’s House has instead organized a sit in in Piazza Grande next Monday at 6.30 pm.
