On the renewal
“The immediate feelings for this renewal are of gratitude, affection and pride. I definitely have to thank the club because, despite everything, they continue to believe in Pavoletti (smiles) but also the city of Cagliari and Sardinia because they demonstrate their affection towards me every day, in every training session, in every match. So ‘the credit for this renewal is also yours because you pushed me to love you and to love this place but above all to try every Sunday to give my best and make all my teammates give their best’. So I thank you. AND It’s truly a beautiful gift to live and wake up every morning in Cagliari.”
On the sense of belonging
“The sense of belonging towards Cagliari and towards Sardinia was born little by little, however it has always given me great satisfaction both on the pitch and above all in life because here I became a man, a father and I lived the best moments of my life here. Then there is one thing that I have in common with all of you, that is the love for the land but above all living peacefully, living everyday life, going down, going shopping, going on errands with or without family. Passing by and being greeted “Hi Leo” or “Hi Pavo” is a lot for me. Then, when I have a moment of time, being at the seaside is for me the greatest gift a man can have.”
On his seven years at Cagliari
“These seven years have passed quickly but they have been full of successes and also disappointments. I remember very well when I put my first foot once I landed at Elmas airport or how the last great battle in Florence where we managed to obtain a truly great salvation. The second year was a championship full of goals but above all there was the birth of my first son (Giorgio ed.). The third was my big worry. The club had bought great players, it was a very exciting championship in the first part and I could only cheer because of the knee injury. Then Covid arrived, many other things happened and then we arrived at my return to the field after the second cruciate. Let’s say that the third year was more pain than joy, but I needed them to start again the following year with a lot of energy and that was the year of rebirth, of awareness, of Pavoletti’s return because everyone thought I was a dead man for the two crusaders . And instead in the fight for salvation, in the most intense and difficult period, I was ready. That also gave me a lot of inner strength because it wasn’t easy, I hadn’t been put in the best conditions to give everything but as a man I found inner strengths that I didn’t even know I had. Then we move on to the disastrous year of relegation. Unfortunately it was a year where everything went wrong, where everything was wrong primarily on our part. We have always assumed our responsibilities but I can’t even forget the birth of my second child (Brando ed.). In the disappointment, sportingly speaking, there was also the joy given by the birth of the second child.”
On the Ranieri two-year period and the season just gone by
“AND It was a growth journey that then led us to experience two wonderful years, from the promotion to Serie A to the return of our coach Claudio Ranieri up to this year’s salvation. It was a rollercoaster all year but then we arrived in Reggio Emilia celebrating like children. The season in Serie A just ended? If I have to describe the season just ended in three flashes, I would certainly say the match won 4-3 against Frosinone. From there, our awareness was born that we could stay in Serie A. The second big step was the post-match meeting after Lazio at home, where we had lost and the coach, to act as a lightning rod, tried to resign but we didn’t. we are held tight. Then, surely, the third flash is Reggio Emilia, salvation and all the celebrations that were born from there.”
About the future
“The new objectives of these years will be simple and outlined. Mister Ranieri has followed a beautiful path and we will certainly have to carry forward all these principles that the mister, day after day, has instilled in us and therefore we will not be able to hide. Every player, when he feels the affection of his fans and his city, certainly leads to incredible results and great comebacks. They are thanks to us but if we are not pushed by you fans it cannot end the way it ended this year. To achieve certain objectives there must be a serene and peaceful environment. My personal secret dream is to make all the Cagliari fans spend two happy years with great victories but above all with great goals. I’d like to get back to dusting myself off and scoring a bit more than what I’ve been doing in recent years. I’m working well and I’ve recovered. They will be two intense years but I’m sure we will get great satisfaction.”
