Latina / Al Karama, new fire at the former reception centre: arson leads are being followed

LATINA – Last night a second fire devastated the area of the former Al Karama reception centre, located along Strada Monfalcone. This site, which has been undergoing work to dispose of the old unhealthy structures for months, is adjacent to a new settlement nearing completion. After a first fire in the afternoon in the brushwood of the surrounding land, which had threatened the former nomad camp, the flames broke out again in the late evening, destroying the containers and abandoned caravans left after the first clean-up operations.

The firefighters, who intervened promptly to put out the flames, were supported by the Carabinieri of the Latina Company. The authorities are investigating the incident, with the hypothesis that the double fire may have been arson. Although it is still difficult to identify a motive that justifies this gesture, the coincidence of the two episodes fuels suspicions.

Firefighting specialists are evaluating the possibility that the second fire may have been caused by an outbreak that remained lit from the afternoon blaze, which would have regained strength during the night. However, this hypothesis appears remote, since the second fire directly and violently involved the area adjacent to the old reception centre, affecting the prefabricated buildings used as an extension of the nomad camp.

No useful traces were found to clarify the investigators’ doubts, but it seems clear that the second fire was intentionally set among the containers and caravans, the last part left to be reclaimed compared to the rest of the former centre, already dismantled and reclaimed. in the last months.

The former Al Karama centre, located between Borgo Montello and Bainsizza, has remained unused since July two years ago. Then, a large brush fire that broke out in the fields behind had involved some of the old structures, requiring the eviction of the nomad camp. The original structures had been built with highly polluting materials, leading to the area being declared unusable.

With the support of the Lazio Region, a reclamation work was started which led to the demolition of the old structures and the start of the construction of a new field on the adjacent land. This project had been on hold for ten years after the construction of the base, but now sees the installation of the new prefabricated houses.

Now the Carabinieri are trying to understand who may have had an interest in carrying out a similar gesture and what motivations may have led to such a destructive act. While investigations continue, the local community is waiting for answers on this mysterious double fire that hit the area of the former Al Karama centre.
