The Islamic community of Vittoria is preparing to celebrate the funerals of Mariem Sassi, 55 years old, and her eldest daughter Samah Zaouali, 34, both of whom died on Thursday due to the fire set by Wajdi Zaouali, 30 years old. The man had decided to kill his parents Mariem and Kamel and his two sisters, Samah and Omaima, aged 19, with fire.
Only Kamel and Omaima recovered and are now fighting for their lives in the intensive care departments of the Civic hospital in Palermo and the Cannizzaro hospital in Catania. Their conditions are very serious, but as the hours pass, hope grows that they will be able to overcome this very difficult situation.
Kamel and Mariem’s son, Wajdi, finds himself locked up in isolation in Ragusa prison, where, however, there is no “Protected” section and it is not excluded that he could be transferred to other places of detention. The validation hearing is scheduled for Monday.
The city is preparing for the funeral which can be celebrated when the magistrate orders the release of the bodies. It is not yet known whether an autopsy should be ordered, which may not be necessary.
The funeral will be celebrated in the mosque in via Montebello, but it is not excluded that another suitable place will be chosen to welcome those who wish to participate, starting from the classmates and schoolmates of Omaima and the other sisters, who attended high schools in Victory. The municipality has proclaimed city mourning on the day of the funeral. Tunisia provides for the repatriation of the bodies of its compatriots with costs borne by the Consulate, but it is not yet known what choices will be made.
The Zouali family has lived in Vittoria for a long time, well integrated into the neighborhood and the city community. They are respected and appreciated.
