Turin, the Osapp report on the situation at the Ferrante Aporti juvenile prison
The situation at the Ferrante Aporti juvenile prison in Turin is dramatic. Against a capacity of 46 minors, there are now 56 minors present: there is no place to sleep. The solution: sleep on the floor on a beach resin cot in the middle of a room where four/five inmates are already present. The situation is further accentuated by the fact that around 20 units of penitentiary police personnel have been posted for years everywhere (we don’t know where) in the offices of the Republic (it’s not clear what happened to them).
The small staff present performs 40 to 50 hours of overtime every month, subjected to psychophysical stress never before recorded in the most deafening silence of the Department of Juvenile Justice which, despite having been informed of the serious situation in Turin, appears not to be interested. Staff are almost systematically deprived of rest. The Institute for minors in Turin has now become a haven for troublesome inmates.
The general secretary Osapp, Dr. Leo Beneduci, asks Undersecretary Ostellari to intervene with the utmost urgency to ascertain the situation of the secondments of staff to even non-institutional locations with serious impoverishment of the structures most at risk, as well as the unjustified overcrowding in the juvenile prison of Turin, since the small Prison police personnel present are really tired and stressed due to the excessive risks and massive workloads. We would like to hope that no serious and irreparable events occur at the penal institute for minors in Turin.
