Arezzo, 15 June 2024 – The press conference ofthe presentation of the Palio della Vittoria 2024, an unmissable event scheduled in Anghiari (in the province of Arezzo), Saturday 29 June in memory of the battle fought in 1440, a decisive clash in redefining the borders of Tuscany and which became famous also thanks to the mysterious work of Leonardo Da Vinci. During the meeting, the program of the twentieth edition of the modern era of the event was illustrated, organized, as always, by the Palio della Vittoria Cultural Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Anghiari and with the fundamental support of sponsors who with their contribution allow for realization.
Saturday 29 June will open at 6.30 pm with the historical re-enactment and the parade in Piazza Baldaccio of the Mayors and the Historical Processions of the participating municipalities and will experience the most awaited moment at sunset with the start of the race in climb (1440 meters from the Cappella della Vittoria located in the plain that unites Anghiari and Sansepolcro up to Piazza Baldaccio) which will award the winning Municipality the coveted prize.
The re-enactment will see the presence of the historical processions of Florence, Arezzo, Sansepolcro, Anghiari and the knights of the host country, while around 20 municipalities will participate in the uphill race that characterizes the Palio, over the distance that evokes the year of the Battle (1440 meters in fact). A breathless race in which the valiant athletes will be able to protect their captain and/or disadvantage their opponents through pushes, holds and tackles, as permitted by the regulations. A “one of a kind” race, the craziest race in the world, as it has been renamed. The towns and cities that have animated the event for many editions were present, including those in the area, including Florence, Milan, Arezzo and Gubbio, but also some new entries that will be confirmed in the coming days. Each municipality will be able to field a maximum of 5 athletes at the start, for a total number that could set a new record. Anghiari leads the roll of honor with 4 victories, in 2023 Gubbio achieved success thanks to the feat of Manuel Moriconi.
The president of the Palio della Vittoria Association Valter Capacci, the mayor of Anghiari and president of the Province of Arezzo Alessandro Polcri, the councilors of the host municipality Ilaria Lorenzini and Alberica Barbolani da Montauto, the representatives of the sponsors spoke about this and the planned initiatives. and Elena Bartolini of Il Tombolo di Anghiari, the association that created the wonderful Palio in lace this year.
Among the new features is the “Participate in the Photo Battle” photography competition which will reward the most beautiful photos taken during the historical re-enactment, race and dinner, while among the planned initiatives stands out the “Racconto il mio Palio” scholarship aimed at young people and created thanks to the collaboration with Banca di Anghiari e Stia and Istituto Comprensivo di Anghiari (drawings exhibited at Palazzo Pretorio until 29 June). Among the events preceding the day of the Palio, worth mentioning on Sunday 23 June at 9.00 pm is the Palio Blessing ceremony followed by the “provaccia” (race on the ramps of the Ruga di San Martino open to athletes who want to test their legs on the difficult climb ).
June 29th is the day of the PALIO DELLA VITTORIA 2024 which, after the historical re-enactment, the race and the awards ceremony, will end with the “Victory Dinner” on the Ancient Walls (which you can participate in by booking on 0575788009).
