Wild boar invasion in Calabria, Coldiretti: “no more uncontrolled fauna”

The number of farmers, citizens, mayors and other representatives of the institutions at the Coldiretti event is constantly growing throughout the region. “No more wild boars and wildlife”. “Despite having recorded an appreciable first step forward by the Regional Council which approved the approval of the “Guidelines of the Extraordinary Plan for the management and containment of wild fauna”, proposed some time ago by Coldiretti”.

“We will continue to move forward because the severity of the wild boar and wildlife emergency, which has been out of control for too long, requires it, affecting not only farmers, but also citizens and affecting all of the Calabrian municipalities, from the countryside to the inhabited centres”. This is what he states Franco Aceto President of Coldiretti Calabria and member of the Confederal Council.

Monitoring the implementation of the resolution is essential

“The wild boars – specifies Vinegar – Over the last year, they have caused around five million euros in damage to Calabrian agriculture, devastating fields of wheat, potatoes, corn, vegetables and even vineyards and orchards. The damage caused by wild animals is not reimbursed except in a minimal part and often after many years, with a situation that has led many to give up reporting the attacks they have suffered.”

“Among other things, the few compensations that arrive never cover the real value of the destroyed product or the killed animal. To give an example, a producer of fine wine who has had his vineyard devastated by wild boars will only be compensated for the simple value of the grapes and the same happens for other crops”.

“In Coldiretti – explains the leader of Coldiretti – Furthermore, the protection of the pig herd is at heart, which has over 5 thousand farms in Calabria, including family ones, with around 52 thousand heads of pigs and, net of the four PDO cured meats, Coldiretti estimates that the production sector of cured meats, sausages and pork, breeding, processing, transport and distribution is worth over €400 million, generating many jobs. The direction is the right one, but Coldiretti – concludes Aceto – has the duty to accelerate virtuous paths, so on June 18th it will be in the streets.”
