Rotary: the annual award goes to Prof. Silvio Garattini

The annual Rotary Umbria Awardpromoted and organized by the 17 Rotarians of the District 2090 region, constituted in the Umbria Presidents’ Committee (CPU), was awarded this year to professor Silvio Garattinione of the greatest scientists in the world in pharmacology, ninety-five years old, the most authoritative voice of research in Italy, founder in 1961 of the Mario Negri Institute in Milan, of which he is still president.
The Award was awarded to the illustrious scientist with the following motivation: “for his long and valuable scientific activity in biomedical research, for his social commitment and for his ability to disseminate in favor of health, an example for the Umbrian Rotarian world, gratified by your choice of Umbrian citizenship”.
The illustrious pharmacologist, also well known internationally, holds numerous positions in Italy and in many other countries, is the author of hundreds of scientific works in the field of pharmacology and has received numerous awards and honors at national and international level.
Professor Garattini has lived since 1970 in Cecanibbi, a village in the municipality of Todi, a city which last year awarded him honorary citizenship for his very high professional merits and in recognition of his unconditional love for the city of Todi.
With the patronage and collaboration of the Municipality of Todi, the award ceremony will take place on 21 June at 6pm in the Council Room of the Municipality of Todi, followed by a lectio magistralis by Professor Garattini himself on “Prevention is revolution”, a central theme in the professor’s dissemination activity which is also the title of his most recent work, a recently published book.
According to Garattini, prevention allows you to live longer and free from diseases. Not only that, prevention is also the fight against inequalities, starting from economic ones; prevention is care for the environment and it is savings for the National Health System, in favor of greater resources for accessible and free health for all. These are all objectives that constitute a real cultural revolution, in his opinion necessary for the future of the Earth and its inhabitants, calling everyone to greater commitment for a healthier and more just future.
A qualified and influential message, which represents a warning for everyone and falls promptly into discussions on the current situation of our present and on the evolution of life in the world. An appeal from a personality who has trained many other scientists and who also represents an example of life for the Umbrian Rotarian world and an inspiration for his activity.
The Mayor of Todi, Antonino Ruggiano, expressed on behalf of the city his deepest satisfaction for the prestigious Rotary Umbria Award to Professor Silvio Garattini, taking the opportunity to thank the president of the Rotary Club Todi, Doctor Cesare Angelantoni, for his fervent activity. , who is preparing to conclude his year at the helm of the Rotary association.
