Foggia prison: inmate kicks and punches two Penitentiary Police officers

Two prison police officers were attacked by an inmate in the Foggia prison yesterday afternoon. Federico Pilagatti of the Sappe national secretariat made this known, specifying that a policeman was kicked and punched.
Then the inmate also lashed out at a second officer who intervened in defense of his colleague. Both were treated at the Riuniti polyclinic and discharged with a seven-day prognosis.

In a note, the trade unionist declares himself “tired of updating this war bulletin which is further reducing the already lacking staffing of the Foggia prison police, which will soon force the prefect to guard the prison from outside due to lack of personnel”.

Sappe believes «that the responsibility for what happens in Apulian and national prisons lies entirely with the Ministry of Justice and the Dap (Penitentiary Administration Department).
In the next few days – Pilagatti reports – we will deliver to the Foggia Prosecutor’s Office a further complaint against these authorities who, by forcing a handful of policemen to work with double the number of prisoners compared to the number allowed, are violating a series of laws”.

Sappe will ask the judiciary «that when a prisoner violently attacks and injures a prison officer pursuant to articles 336 and 337 of the penal code, he is arrested in flagrante delicto as happens when other police forces are involved.
Only in this way – he concludes – will it be possible to put a stop to the thousands of attacks that occur against prison officers every year”.
