On Rai5 “Cosenza, Cosangeles” between myth, present and future • Wonders of Calabria

Cosenza, capital of the ancient and warlike Bruttii, and then Athens of Calabria, differs from the rest of the region starting from the dialect spoken and the urban planning approach. In the center of a large area that is friendly nicknamed “Cosangeles”, half an hour’s drive from both the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Sila mountains, the city has a characteristic historic center which however stands next to the new city and has over time become peripheral, beautiful and perhaps lost. A place told by the doc “Cosenza, Cosangeles” by Alessandro Nucci, broadcast for the first time on Sunday 16 June at 10.10pm on Rai 5.

The Crati and Busento rivers flow between the old city and the new city, at whose confluence, according to legend, the Visigothic king Alaric was buried with his treasure. But, beyond the myths, there are many realities that have made Cosenza an active city above all on a cultural level: already the homeland of the philosopher Bernardino Telesio, is today home to a large university (founded in nearby Rende) which has always attracted scholars from all over the world and is even at the forefront of studies on artificial intelligence. The people of Cosenza claim a strong identity belonging to their city, accompanied by a strong sense of community and solidarity towards the least. Cosenza is a small big city “of the North of the South”from which many leave but where others decide to return, which only in recent years is being discovered as a tourist destination and where perhaps before elsewhere it was understood that in the absence of an industrial sector it was possible and necessary to focus everything on culture and humanity.
