A serious episode of aggression involved two policemen on duty at the “Perrino” hospital in Brindisi. On the afternoon of Friday 14 June, the two officers, busy ensuring safety in the emergency room, were violently attacked by two brothers, one of whom was waiting to be seen for a dislocated shoulder.
One of the policemen was punched, suffering craniofacial trauma prognosis of 20 days, while the other officer suffered injuries with a prognosis of 10 days. Medical personnel promptly rescued the two injured officers.
These acts of violence put the safety of healthcare workers and law enforcement at risk, as well as compromising the peace of mind of citizens who rely on hospital services. Tommaso Gioia, health advisor to the president of the Puglia region, expressed deep disappointment and anger at the incident, announcing that he will collaborate with president Michele Emiliano to strengthen hospital facilities and protect those who work to guarantee an adequate service.
Gioia underlined the urgency of immediate interventions to prevent such episodes and ensure a safe and peaceful environment for hospital staff. She reiterated the need for preventive measures to avoid the recurrence of similar situations and protect both healthcare workers and their families.
The two brothers responsible for the attack were reported for injuries. Gioia said acts of violence like this require a decisive response from the relevant authorities. The councilor pledged to work with the institutions to ensure that similar incidents are not repeated and that the guilty are punished according to the law.
