The elderly appear to be those most at risk due to dehydrationProfessor Gasparini points out, linked to fewer compensation mechanisms, including a lower ratio between body fluids and total weight and a reduced sense of thirst.
Exposure to excessive heat, especially if prolonged, can cause more or less serious symptoms such as: sense of exhaustion, difficulty standing due to reduction in blood pressure, in the most serious cases reduction of consciousness leading to coma, increase in body temperature in the absence of infections (hyperthermia), serious damage to the liver and kidneys. If not treated properly, these symptoms (known collectively as ‘heat stroke’) can lead to death.
Domotek’s initiative for the over 65s in Reggio Calabria
Very often it is right there home, the place where older people typically spend the most time, is the problem. Many inadequately insulated buildings reach excessively high temperatures without adequate air conditioning. It is recommended to maintain at least an internal temperature 6-7 degrees lower than outside, and in any case between 22 and 25°C.
