results of the open city council meeting of Reggio Calabria on the issue of Bridge over the Strait: a “SERIOUS NO” to the Opera which captures the essence, the meaning, the idea of the “Pazzano motion”.
This important moment of public discussion, wanted by mayor Falcomata’ also encouraged by councilor Saverio Pazzano, has certified a point of no return.
The majority city councillors, despite the pluralism of the approaches represented, have all highlighted the limits and critical issues of this “Bridge”, of the procedure implemented by Salvini and co.
It was councilor Giuseppe Marino, for the Democratic Party, who clarified the unity of purpose of all the national and local centre-left branches:
this is not the case, this is how the territories, communities and citizens who are victims of expropriation are hurt.
Mayor Falcomata’, then, at the conclusion of the work, clarified clearly what the “institutional” approach means:
no third party, no neutrality.
The institutions have the duty to operate well beyond the “Bridge” procedures.
the Strait Area is built with the protagonism of the territories and not with the subtraction of the Cohesion Funds operated by the Government to finance the “Great Work” of the Northern League.
And the Strait Area is being built – these are the first results achieved – with the single integrated Atm/Atam ticket, with the strengthening of mobility on the Strait, with functional hydrofoils at the Reggio airport.
The summary of this journey?
The mayor of Reggio, his majority, his party, say a “firm NO” to this Bridge and accept the essence, the meaning, the idea of the “Crazy motion” which commits the mayor and who has come to suspend every act preparatory to the realization of this very dangerous deception wanted by Salvini.
The consequences of this clear stance have direct consequences throughout the Metropolitan City.
It is hoped that a direct and similar manifestation of political will can also be expressed at Palazzo San Giovanni, in the Council Chamber of Villa, with a renewed protagonism of the mayor and the municipal councilors of the “city under the Bridge”.
The same goes, obviously, also for Messina.
Stating a “SOUND NO” in the face of the arrogance of the Right ready to rape the Strait matters, indeed!
Formalizing the political will of the City Council counts, of course!
Suspending everything for the precautionary principle counts, of course!
Sending all the paperwork back to Rome and finally asking for the activation of a “national” table for the necessary infrastructures in our territories certainly counts!
Yesterday a fixed point was marked for all our communities, the Council of Reggio Emilia, its Mayor, took on a leading role against the improper and disorganized accelerations that accompany the tragicomic pantomime put in place by the Northern League, by that “foot stranger on the heart” of which Falcomata spoke well.
A burden that is no longer bearable and requires courage and competence. The others, those in favor, the supporters of the Work, were all absent.
From the empty seats of the Right, once again, the disinterest in the real problems of Reggio and the CM emerged, the sidereal distance from the real issues that concern the destinies of the territories, highlighting once again the concrete inability of the oppositions to become an alternative of City government. In fact, they respond to other, exogenous interests, far from the Strait.

La Strada: The open city council sanctions the “firm NO” to this Bridge and welcomes the “Pazzano motion”
“Let’s say a firm no to how we arrived, to how we are arriving, to all the fragilities, the inconsistencies, the inconsistencies that lie behind a public work like this”, these words addressed to assembly by Mayor Falcomatà sanction, at the end of the City Council meeting opened on the Bridge, a clear position of the municipal administration of Reggio Calabria. A very participatory City Council, both in interventions and in the presence of citizens, which highlights the ability to transfer the debate from the squares and streets to institutional settings, where the demands of the people who see their homes and assets threatened, of the people who they understand how desires that have nothing to do with public interests loom over their land, they become political directions, administrative choices.
A clear path, highly confrontational, which, starting from the public assembly called last March 1st by La Strada in the Battaglia council chamber, was able to change a timid criticism of local institutions towards some approaches of the Government on the Bridge in an inexorable rejection of the procedures, methods, times, arguments and technical data produced so far. This was done through real listening to the territories, the associations, the unions, the political movements and parties, the intermediate bodies which – with extremely enriching differences and pluralities – presented and discussed objective contents that demonstrate the great bluff of the Bridge.
The culmination of the open city council discussion was the motion presented by La Strada with councilor Saverio Pazzano: a complete suspension of any complementary or preparatory activity to the Bridge, until there is an executive project.
The data is extremely significant: only the executive project, if and when it is ever presented, will be able to say that the technical possibilities and money to build the Bridge really exist. Until then, the municipal administration of Reggio Calabria says no to the risk of the area becoming a construction site, of houses being expropriated, of the possible movement of inert materials transforming our valleys into landfills. “Not pending the services conference, not pending the construction site project, but pending the executive project”, councilor Pazzano was very clear in reiterating the gist of the motion. “Because it is only upon presentation of the executive project that it will be possible to discuss the merits of the work.
