Something is moving at the Port of Corigliano-Rossano: Nuovo Pignone BH has started talks

CORIGLIANO-ROSSANO – Nuovo Pignone, a company of the Baker Hughes group, has started the first interviews for the selection of managers responsible for the construction of the new production plant planned within the Port of Corigliano-Rossano. This news, which is confirmed by trade union circles although not yet officially announced by the company, represents a crucial moment for the future of the cutting-edge metalworking industry that the Tuscan company would like to establish in the north-eastern Calabria area.

There has been no news about the fate of the mega assembly and painting workshop that should be built on docks 3, 4 and 5 of the large dock in the Piana di Sibari since last March, when the Southern Tyrrhenian Port System Authority and of the Calabrian Ionian Sea had signed the deed of submission of the area following the Services Conference which concluded the authorization process.

A Complex Authorization Matter

A leader in the sector of high-tech components and solutions for the liquefaction of gas in related plants, the Baker Hughes company designs and supplies cutting-edge technologies for customers around the world, implementing low CO2 emission technologies, in in line with the objectives of the European Union which calls for its elimination by 2050. Present in over 120 countries, with eight sites in Italy specialized in the production of turbomachinery for the industrial and energy market, it has been active in Calabria since 1962 in Vibo Valentia.

Now, with a new investment in Calabria, it aims to upgrade the Vibo Valentia plant and create a site in Corigliano-Rossano to support the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market and the development of solutions for energy transition and digitalisation .

Maximum attention to local labor

With reference to employment, «in line with the company’s responsibility towards the communities in which it operates – the note from the System Authority continues – local hiring will be favoured, in order to attract and retain talent and enhance the human capital that the Calabrian territory expresses. As in all the other Group plants in Italy, the Corigliano-Rossano plant also promises high quality standards of respect for the environment, health and safety at work.”

Conflicting opinions on allocation

There is no shortage of conflicting opinions regarding the allocation of the plant in the Port of Corigliano-Rossano. While on the one hand there are those who see the investment as a significant opportunity for the creation of jobs and economic development, on the other, there are concerns linked to the environmental impact and urban transformations of the port area. Even in the last electoral campaign, lacking in solutions and proposals (both political sides in the field were careful not to address the dispute), the idea of bring the industrial settlement to the hinterland instead of the port. And therefore in the Asi area which is located right behind the port.
