118 rescuer attacked in Agrigento, seriously injured

In Agrigento, a Seus rescue worker was brutally attacked on the afternoon of June 14th. The attack was perpetrated by the patient he was helping and by a family member of the latter. The rescuer, victim of a violent beating, lost consciousness due to a head injury and is hospitalized under code red in the emergency room of the San Giovanni di Dio hospital, where he is under medical observation.

The Board of Directors of Seus, composed of the president Riccardo Castro, Pietro Marchetta and Maria Stella Marino, expressed profound indignation at the incident. “A cowardly act, unfortunately yet another towards the 118 operators, who carry out their duty with great professionalism and self-sacrifice”, they declared, adding that the maximum solidarity and legal support will be offered to the attacked rescuer.

Giuseppe Misuraca, head of the 118 operations center in Agrigento, also intervened, firmly condemning the episode: «Strong condemnation of this serious act of violence which once again affects emergency personnel. We are close to our colleague and wish him a speedy recovery.”

This latest episode of violence against medical and paramedical staff highlights the growing need for more stringent security measures to ensure the protection of those who work on the front line every day to save human lives. The local community and health authorities are awaiting further developments on the condition of the injured rescuer and on the legal actions that will be taken against those responsible for the attack. – Stock image.
