Bergamo, after more than 10 years of abandonment, the former post office in via Maffei is for sale

For over ten years he has been a black hole in the city center. But now it could come the turning point for the old building once occupied by the Post Office Clara Maffei and Pascoli streets. The property has in fact been put up for sale. There starting price is 4.5 million of Euro. The palace, approx 6,500 square metersis spread over seven floors above ground, to which is added an underground part with a system accesses and slides designed for the coming and going of vehicles with correspondence and also has an open area of ​​1,300 square metres. After the closing of the post offices the residents had complained on several occasions about the presence of stragglers and homeless people who bivouacked on the steps of the building and used it as a shelter for the night. The property, also at the request of the Municipality, had intervened fencing off the covered part from a shed that was suitable for being occupied by the homeless. In collaboration with Palazzo Frizzoni and the police, the Post Office carried out an important intervention in 2017 to free the premises and the surrounding area. The temporary fence was followed by a permanent one, built as one v it was cancelled which partially resolved i safety issues in Zone.

After the closure of the post offices, residents had complained on several occasions about the presence of stragglers and homeless people who bivouacked on the steps of the building and used it as a shelter for the night.

The abandoned building in short, it has created a lot of worry for the residents of the area, with the real risk of illegal occupation taking place, also considering the proximity to the station. Furthermore, near the former post office building there are numerous condominiums, as well as the Secco Suardo teaching institute and, not far away, the Lussana scientific high school, schools attended by hundreds of students. Even yesterday afternoon on the sidewalk adjacent to the abandoned building, which is partially hidden by plants and vegetation, one could notice a constant coming and going of people and many bottles of alcohol abandoned on the ground, a sign that the place is still frequented by stragglers and the homeless. The traditional red box where letters were sent has in fact been out of use for some time and the two holes (with the destination city and outside Bergamo) have been covered with brown adhesive tape.

Now we look to the future, in the hope that some investors will come forward to take over the complex, which will have to be redeveloped, if not demolished and rebuilt, so as to give it a new life, giving back to all citizens a central piece of Bergamo.

A lot of time has passed, more than a decade, but many remember it as if it were yesterday when the post office was working at full capacity with the delivery of parcels and correspondence and a continuous coming and going of vehicles with shipments on board. Now we look to the futurein the hope that some investors will come forward to take over the complex, which will have to be completely redeveloped, if not demolished and rebuilt, in order to give it a new life, giving back to all citizens a central piece of Bergamo.
