San Marino, Gerardo Giovagnoli (PSD) claims electoral victory: “We have grown more than anyone else”

We asked Gerardo Giovagnoli, Secretary of the Party of Socialists and Democrats (PSD), for his reflections on the San Marino electoral outcome and on the start of the consultations that the PDCS launched after the appointment of the Captains Regent

“In the meantime, allow me to thank the 273 voters who from outside San Marino, and presumably many of them in the Rimini area, chose to vote for the Party of Socialists and Democrats. For the first time we acted in collaboration with the Democratic Party and the lists that presented themselves in the surrounding areas, given the simultaneous going to the polls both in San Marino and in various Italian municipalities.

Thanks to this we are the country’s second largest force in the foreign electorate.

This choice is completely inherent to the PSD which has always stood out as the party with the greatest external relations both at an Italian and European level, and these elections have marked a success for us beyond all expectations. Without a doubt this happened because we maintained our identity and now, after the period of grace of movementism both in San Marino and in Italy, this driving force has run out and the moment of traditional parties has returned.

In fact, besides us, those who have grown are mostly traditional parties, or rather, pro-European ones.

Again, this is a great victory for us, given that we have always believed in European integration more than anyone else.

Going from 3 to 8 councilors, coming from a government position in a period that is not at all easy, makes us proud of what we have achieved and we are grateful to the citizens who wanted to reward the PSD for the quality of its contents and for the quality of the list presented

The electoral campaign that we brought to the voters’ attention was successful also thanks to suggestions from our Italian friends, primarily the Hon. Andrea Gnassi, who provided a truly appreciable contribution of ideas and, above all, approach.

Furthermore, hosting Stefano Bonaccini in San Marino was very effective in demonstrating the PSD’s ability to develop relationships and we are truly happy that in Brussels we will find a friend who has done so much, and good, for Emilia Romagna , our great neighbor.

The PSD is now the only party in San Marino that can define itself as both socialist and democratic; the other acronyms that carried these important political messages will not be represented in the Great and General Council for the first time in history. This gives us a great responsibility, but also a lot of strength to be able to further establish ourselves as the reference party on the left together with Libera’s coalition allies who have maintained the electoral penetration of 2019, but have not grown.

The party with the relative majority in San Marino remains the Christian Democracy and, given the electoral law, there are no other possibilities for constituting a majority other than that which passes through an agreement with that party.

The consultations have already begun and we believe, in the allotted time of two weeks, to find the most appropriate synthesis to ensure that we maintain the government’s position, but also to impart greater reformist strength to the country, seizing all the opportunities offered by the Association agreement with Europe, a truly great novelty of the legislature that is about to begin.”
