Yet another Roma camp fire proves the Administration’s flop announcements

The Roma issue cannot be resolved with proclamations, but with a collective and systemic process of the entire administered community

Press release

Yet another fire in the area of the Roma camp, from which columns of smoke rose yesterday too, affecting not only the surrounding areas, with the hospital in the lead, but also those adjacent to the Sant’Antonio Fair which attracts numerous citizens even from neighboring towns, it is a further example of Mayor Mascaro’s many flops.

A seriously negative result which adds to the many “fumes” of an Administration which, within a year of taking office, should have, according to its bombastic programme, addressed and resolved the issue of the Roma camp and which now – after a very long ten years – is proposes again in its human and hygienic-sanitary drama. The propaganda optimism of Mayor Mascaro in recent months, which relied on the substantial economic aid from the Calabria Region, is the sign of further failure of a policy made up of slogans and proclamations which translate into concrete damage for citizens, from the from an economic and health perspective. The numerous and publicized inter-institutional meetings which were presented as the panacea for all ills, with hypotheses of immediate solutions – given the availability of eight million euros – are struggling to provide concrete answers to the city.

The event of the last few hours affected via Perugini with an acrid smell spread by a gigantic column of smoke, which spread over a large part of the city in a very short time. The news records the discomfort of motorists, residents of nearby neighborhoods, patients and hospital staff.

Today we cannot do anything but acknowledge that despite the two council meetings of Mayor Mascaro, who had shouted in the squares the promise to solve everything in a very short time, the city’s problems still remain unsolved today.

The centre-right, led by the Mayor’s party, has been a national, regional and city government force for the last 20 years; but despite the concurrence of these favorable political situations there are no traces of even the slightest solution to the Scordovillo camp.

The announcements full of promises from the government and administrative authorities clash with the harsh reality of the facts. The Roma camp still remains a “ghetto” today and forces us to witness yet another fire and an unsurpassed condition of degradation.

The center-right in the national and regional government and the municipal administration, led by the mayor, stop just doing propaganda, the elections are over.

The time has come to nip in the bud all these episodes of toxicity that undermine air quality to the detriment of all citizens with adequate control measures.

The Roma issue cannot be resolved with proclamations, but with a collective and systemic process of the entire administered community.

PD city secretary
