The Municipality of Rimini removes the veils from the project of the new Piazza Marvelli

Green roofs, waterfalls, functions and spaces to be experienced and fully accessible: here is the new Piazza Marvelli, the agora of Rimini a stone’s throw from the sea which will be built above the underground car park.

This was announced in a press release Municipality of Rimini, who subsequently released the following statements in a note: “Under a car park with over three hundred spaces, above a square created with innovative and sustainable architectural and material choices, multifunctional and therefore more attractive, which thus rediscovers its original vocation as an agora, a stone’s throw from the beach and in the heart of the Sea Park. Water, greenery, fluid lines, spaces to live and share: these are some of the elements that guide the design proposal of the new Marvelli squarean urban redevelopment intervention that aims to combine the needs of accessibility, design and enhancement of the natural environment in which it is located, transforming an open space into an iconic gateway to the seaside area of the city”.

The new square “will be born on the site of the Tripoli underground parkingthe infrastructure on which work began a few weeks ago and which, once completed, will make it possible to make available over three hundred parking spaces and a large area dedicated to parking motorbikes (225 spaces), significantly implementing the parking serving a central area of the Rimini marina”.

Furthermore, “from the objective of harmonizing the accessibility of the new car park to the design of the Parco del Mare, the overall refunctionalisation of the square was born, designed for the municipal administration by the Structura Engineering studio with the creative consultancy of the architect Gianni Ranaulo: two established names in the field of architecture, recognized on an international scale and with decades of experience in the design of urban spaces, who have combined ideas and skills to create this innovative intervention”.

And again: “The intervention follows the philosophy of what has already been achieved in Piazzale Kennedy, where the first viewpoint over the sea arose above the important hydraulic structure created as part of the Bathing Protection Plan, which immediately became a symbolic place and space meeting place for citizens and tourists. A new design of the waterfront is therefore starting to take shape, in which the renaturalisation promoted by the Sea Park is accompanied by the inclusion of new raised terraces, designed specifically to appreciate the surrounding natural landscape. In addition to Piazzale Kennedy and the new Piazza Tripoli, new sea views are also being planned in Bellariva and Rivazzurra, built to complement the PSBO works starting next autumn”.

The new square “will be developed on two levels: on the ground floor, in correspondence with the road, the architectural project integrates the access system to the underground car park and the parking area for motorcycles, which will be facilitated by the construction of the new roundabout at the intersection between Viale Tripoli and Viale delle Regine and connecting pedestrian paths; on the south-east side of the square, a pedestrian boulevard will also be created, with the possibility of inserting spaces with the functions of public businesses in dialogue with existing activities”.

A distinctive element of the space “are the ‘falling waters’ that create a sort of scenic entrance backdrop for those arriving from via Tripoli, made up of steps that welcome the descending flow of water, thus acting as a connection between the two levels”. The waterfalls, integrated with further water features, “will also be present on the sea side, thus offering the same visual effect to those who walk along the Parco del Mare walk”.

And it doesn’t end there: “The actual square will develop on the upper floor, designed as a place for socializing and meeting. Reachable by stairs and pedestrian paths, the main body of the project will include green rest areas, natural spaces for relaxation and outdoor activities, a play area equipped for children and shaded areas created through special covers to shield the light solar and enhance urban comfort. Three rooms are also planned characterized by soft and fluid lines which will allow the elevator shafts leading to the underground car park to be shielded and at the same time will be able to accommodate other functions and services for the public, transforming the square into a place to rest and not just pass through. ”.

All the coverings of the various spaces and functions envisaged “will be made up of green roofs”, in line with one of the guiding principles of the project designed to favor the environmental inclusion of the work and enhance the natural context, also by adopting solutions aimed at counteract the effects of climate change”.

From the note from the Municipality of Rimini it also emerges that “the square, now completely asphalted, will give way to a green roof on different levels; the area of waterproofed surfaces will be significantly reduced, increasing the absorption capacity, with a consequent reduction in the volumes of rainwater to be conveyed into the sewer system and thus promoting hydraulic safety”.

The proposed timetable “envisages the start of the construction work on the new square in continuity with the conclusion of the construction of the underground car park, which is expected to be delivered by 2026”.
In the meantime “we will advance with the design process with the definition and approval of the definitive and executive project, with the aim of implementing the first preparatory works for the construction of the square in parallel with the final phases of the parking construction site”.

“The basic idea is to enrich a central area of the city with new services – underlines the mayor of Rimini, Jamil Sadegholvaad -. The theme of parking, addressed with the underground car park, combines with that of the quality and needs of a new attractive center for its beauty and functionality. The Sea Park will also be the Park of public terraces overlooking the sea, of viewpoints overlooking the beautiful view of our beach and our sea. We have chosen world-class designers because this work cannot be one of many. We feel the need to continue on a path that aims to create new relational places, where until now there was something else. The new designed viewpoint will be characterized by highly social functions: water games, children’s games, various functions. A square to be experienced all day, 12 months a year”.
