The Municipality of Bisceglie acquires the San Luigi Monastery, it will become an urban center for young people – La Diretta 1993 Bisceglie News

A historic day. Yesterday the Municipality of Bisceglie officially acquired, with an expropriation procedure, the San Luigi Monastery, one of the most valuable architectural assets of historical-cultural interest in the entire city territory, already subject to the protection of the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape BAT and Foggia.

The property, owned by the Poor Clare Nuns, located in via Frisari, in the historic centre, was currently unused as the Sisters had moved their residence to the Mission House in via Imbriani. The Municipality, therefore, did not miss the opportunity to take possession of it through a declaration of public utility and expropriation, to transform it, with appropriate redevelopment interventions, into a community urban center, a home of arts and music, a meeting place and cultural center available to young people and associations, a hotbed of creativity and talent.

All of this is part of the PNRR financing of two million euros from the Ministry of the Interior obtained by the Angarano Administration as part of urban regeneration projects, aimed at reducing phenomena of marginalization and social degradation. The intervention is included in the three-year planning of public works 2022/2024 and is included in the general report of the General Urban Plan adopted in 2023.

“We are taking possession of one of the most beautiful and prestigious historical and cultural buildings in our City to make it a place available to young people, at the service of the City for the promotion of the arts”, commented the Mayor of Bisceglie, Angelantonio Angarano, after having assisted, together with the Councilor for Culture Emilia Tota, in the official acquisition formalized at the Acquaviva notary office. “A place to support the musical vocation of the City, promote culture in all its forms, cultivate the talents of our young people, encourage aggregation and social inclusion. The enrichment of the historical-cultural heritage of the Municipality continues. Together with the new library in the monastery of Santa Croce which will soon open its doors, the Garibaldi theater where work is being completed, the Swabian-Angevin castle, Palazzo Tupputi, the diocesan museum and the many gems of our historic centre, we continue to support and strengthen the creation of a real cultural hub in our Old City, so that, in concert with the many cultural events that already take place there, it can increasingly come alive and be the beating heart of sociality, life and art”.
