Calabria’s economy slows down in 2023 –

“In 2023 the Calabrian economy slowed down, after the two years of sustained recovery that followed the pandemic crisis. Based on the Bank of Italy’s Iter indicator, economic activity in Calabria would have grown in the year by 0.6% (3.2% in 2022), a figure similar to the South and lower than the Italian average” this is what emerged from the annual report presented this morning in Catanzaro by the regional branch of Bankitalia.

Illustrating the situation was the director Marcello Mala Misura, who stated: “The macroeconomic framework was particularly affected by the loss of purchasing power of families and the tightening of credit access conditions. Overall, the trend in consumption was less favorable than that of investments. Looking ahead, the economic situation could benefit from the strong slowdown in inflation recorded at the end of 2023 in the region, as well as in the rest of the country, especially in relation to the drop in the price of energy goods. However, possible downward risks for growth could derive – continues the regional Bank of Italy – from the further worsening of geopolitical tensions, which weigh on uncertainty and the climate of confidence of economic operators”. However, an increase in employment was noted, both self-employed and, in particular, employed, with a wider use of permanent contracts. Paradoxically, according to the report “despite the increase in people looking for work, the difficulty in finding manpower reported by companies has continued to grow, mainly involving technical or highly specialized figures”.

“The slower economic performance of Calabria – declared Mala Misura – was certainly influenced by the inflationary dynamics which have still produced their effects and the increase in rates resulting from the monetary restriction implemented in response to inflation pressures. Worth noting is the good trend in employment which in general has grown and has had positive effects on family income”.
