Farmaè Viareggio’s run in the Euro Winners Cup ends in the round of 16, beaten on penalties by Real Munster (11-10). In Nazaré (Portugal), the Bianconeri, trailing twice, managed to come back and move ahead, but with 17 seconds left they were leveled at 3-3. The match continues into extra time, which is not enough to decide the winner. Thus it goes to penalties, with the errors of Fazzini, Genovali and Rombi shattering VBS’s dream of winning the highest continental club trophy again after 8 years. Tomorrow the match against Catania is scheduled for ninth place.

VBS found themselves trailing in the 2nd minute, when Dmais unleashed a powerful left-footed shot that hit the post, and Hodel was the quickest to counter the rebound, putting Real Munster ahead. Even though they were unable to create real dangers immediately, the Bianconeri did not let themselves be influenced by the disadvantage. And in the 7th minute they re-establish parity: Eudin works a ball on the left and places it centrally for Ozu, who, taking advantage of the space granted by the German defense, releases an unstoppable right-footed shot for Karolak. Shortly afterwards Remedi, face to face with the opposing goalkeeper, does not angle the close range attempt enough.
Farmaè Viareggio starts strong in the central section: Eudin challenges Karolak twice, then Carpita tries from distance, without success. In their best moment, however, the Bianconeri conceded the second goal, with Nowak receiving from the right and hitting Carpita with a flying scissors kick. Barely a minute passes and the equalizer arrives, signed by the captain with a shot from far away. In the 7th minute VBS took the lead with a clever piece from Eudin, a crossed overhead kick which enhanced Remedi’s recovery of the ball. Munster didn’t react immediately, Carpita came close to scoring a double in the 9th minute by hitting the crossbar with another shot from far away, then Karolak thwarted Remedi’s short-range acrobatics.
The German goalkeeper repeats himself on Zè Lucas’ left-footed diagonal at the start of the third half. Real Munster tries to increase the attacking pressure and in the 5th minute they come close to equalizing with Hodel who forces Carpita to make a superlative save. The Bianconeri found help in good fortune in the 8th minute, when Oba hit the crossbar with a shot from outside. Carpita then closes the shutter on all the Germans’ shots. With 17 seconds left, Ozu commits a foul on Metzler: the German number 10 converts the following free throw, giving Gianni Santini, who replaced Carpita for the occasion, no chance. The Juventus goalkeeper deflects Dmais’s insidious right-footed shot and Hodel’s subsequent acrobatics, keeping the 3-3 alive. At the last minute Bertacca becomes dangerous with a free throw just wide. The result does not change, thus making penalties necessary: Fazzini makes a mistake, but Gianni Santini is capitalized on Dmais. It goes on and on, Genovali and Rombi have their respective penalties rejected by Karolak. Daniel, however, achieves his goal, condemning VBS to defeat and elimination.
