The debut of BabelNova Orchestra at Testaccio Estate

The BabelNova Orchestra, a formation made up of the musicians of the now historic Orchestra of Piazza Vittorio, is ready to present its first album “Magma” to the Roman public. After debuting on stage at the last Sanremo Festival, on the evening of duets with Dargen D’Amico, the band will perform on June 19th at Testaccio Estate. The choice of the date is not random: the concert coincides with World Refugee Day, an anniversary celebrated throughout the world to raise awareness on the issue of refugee rights.

The event will be held in the suggestive location of the Città dell’Altra Economia, a multifunctional center located in the heart of Testaccio, which will also host other initiatives promoted by Refugees Welcome Italia. The concert, with free admission, is the starting point of an evening dedicated to sharing and multiculturalism, with activities that will involve activists, refugees and audiences of all ages.

Magma: a fusion of sounds and cultures

“Magma” is the title of the first album by BabelNova Orchestra, a recording that follows the release of the singles “Ama La Tierra” and “Safi Safi”. With this album, the group intends to celebrate the musical and cultural diversity of its members and their stories. The ensemble, led by double bass player Pino Pecorelli, offers a current reinterpretation of its musical and cultural roots, enriched by the inclusion of young second generation musicians.

The ten tracks of the album represent a journey through different sounds: from cumbia to mariachi explosions, passing through Sufi reminiscences, jazz horns, rocking guitars and dub and pop rhythms. This mix of musical genres and styles creates a sound vortex that reflects the meeting between winds from different regions of the world, from the warm ones of the Sirocco to the cold ones of the Meltemi. The music of “Magma” thus presents itself as a contemporary and global response to the risks of closure in anachronistic nationalisms.

Program of the evening and collateral initiatives

The evening of June 19th will begin at 6.30pm with a series of workshops and activities dedicated to the little ones, organized by “To make a game”. There will also be stories, stories and insights on the themes of migration and inclusion, curated by Refugees Welcome Italia, a reality that has been committed to welcoming and integrating refugees for years.

Subsequently, a multicultural dinner will be offered in which activists, migrants and refugees will participate, proposed by the Intersection project. This convivial moment will be an opportunity to learn and share stories and culinary traditions from different parts of the world. At 9.30pm, the Testaccio Estate stage will light up with the rhythms and melodies performed by the BabelNova Orchestra, which promises to make the chords of the spectators’ souls vibrate with its music full of meanings and emotions.
