Caritas Reggio Calabria civil service, another year concluded

From 13 to 15 May the Hotel Casa Rossa in Crotone hosted the end-of-service course for young people in civil service at the diocesan Caritas: «Unlike the beginning and mid-service course, these days gave us the opportunity to reflect and internalize better our experience in the twelve months of service”, say the protagonists who carried out their service in the diocese of Reggio Calabria. In this article their testimonies.

Universal civil service in Caritas, another year concluded: it’s time to take stock for the children of Reggio Calabria

At first we met as a group, reflecting together on how much these twelve months have transformed us, how much we have noticed the change in others and how much the others have noticed our change.

The next day, starting from a brief moment of desert, we started a personal assessment, trying to “give colour” to our year. In the afternoon, however, each of us had the opportunity to talk about our experience of civil service, with all the ups and downs, the moments that went well and those that went less well, the significant meetings that left their mark and which have given a new direction to our lives.

The last day was the moment of the diocesan verification, which allowed us to realize that the strength of the civil service is precisely that of walking together, without leaving anyone behind. There were days in which we were able to take stock of the situation, understand how we have progressed up to now and with whom, days in which we were able to stop and understand that the Civil Service only ends with a contract, but in reality it begins now, because all that that we have experienced and lived bear fruit in everyday life.

A journey ended too soon… Here’s what remains

When you start your civil service you have the feeling that it will never end, the first day of service seems to be very far from the last, and instead in an instant, from the beginning of service course in Cetraro we found ourselves at the end of service course in Crotone , each one different from what it was.

What this course has left us is the awareness that this year’s meetings, with the poor, with children in difficult situations, with migrants, have destroyed and recomposed our hearts, opening our eyes to the fact that the heartbeat of the heart is not a movement by inertia but an exercise to be performed daily. At the end of this year, despite all the difficulties that each of us has encountered, there remains the sense of beauty that must be cultivated and preserved in those people and in those places that seem – only apparently – without hope.

There remains a sense of gratitude towards all our trainers, who have been guides and silent guardians not only of our service, but also of our people; attentive observers of our best and most tiring moments. To the colleagues who were traveling companions with whom we shared the backpack when it became too heavy, and to the friends who turned to our centers, who made our hearts alive and beating. And finally, thanks to the diocesan Caritas and the Universal Civil Service, without which our eyes would be a little duller and our lives a little emptier.
