Yesterday morning, 12 June, the Prefect chaired a meeting of the technical table established in the Prefecture in relation to the state of crisis and emergency caused by the serious shortage of water resources in the drinking sector which affects some provinces of the island and linked to the changes climatic conditions resulting in the absence of significant rainfall for approximately two years. Severe state of emergency which in the provincial territory of Caltanissetta is aggravated by the absence of its own water resources.
The Head of the Sicilian Civil Protection took part in the work, also in the capacity of President of the Control Room for the water emergency, the General Manager of the Regional Water and Waste Department, the delegated official of the Hydrographic District Basin Authority of Sicily, the president of the ATI of Caltanissetta together with the Mayors of the Municipalities of Caltanissetta, representatives of the Free Municipal Consortium, of the Civil Engineering, of the ASP CL2, of the ESA, of the Reclamation Consortium 4, of Siciliacque SpA of Palermo, the Director of Caltaqua – Acque di Caltanissetta and the managers of the Cimia, Comunelli and Disueri dams.
At the beginning, the Prefect, in thanking those present, highlighted how the objective of today’s meeting – which follows other meetings on the topic – is to bring together all the elements regarding the water crisis underway in this province in order to identify measures to mitigate and/or overcome the negative consequences for the population. In particular, on this occasion, the Prefect invited us to network and initiate synergistic action that would allow, with a constructive spirit, to find effective solutions to deal with the emergency situation
In this circumstance, Eng. Cocina, who spoke in his capacity as President of the regional control room for the water emergency, announced the admission to financing of a series of interventions to combat the situation of water deficit underway in the territory of the Sicilian Region and which also affect this territory provincial, ensuring maximum support from the Region.
In this regard, the Prefect invited the Mayors of the Municipalities most affected to formulate expeditious projects to be subjected to scrutiny by the Region in order to implement solutions which, although not definitive, can still serve to address the various critical issues related to the absence of water resources .
Various topics were discussed during the meeting which highlighted the commitment of all interested parties to finding additional water resources from alternative sources.
At the end of the meeting the Prefect adjourned the Table to a new session for an update of the overall framework relating to the critical supply issues in the province and the adoption/strengthening of functional strategies to adequately address them.
