Short-cycle multidisciplinary surgery or day surgey saw the Terni hospital as a pioneer of what later became routine surgery. In fact, already twenty years ago, the service where doctors of the various surgical specialties work was inaugurated. Operations that do not have an emergency nature such as hernias, varicose veins and benign pathologies which affect many people and which do not go beyond a hospital stay of no more than 24 hours. The idea of ”one-day surgery” was an intuition of the then general director Ciano Ricci Feliziani and the (retired) doctor Marsilio Francucci. Over the years, that structure has been recognized as an accredited national teaching center for the advanced training course of the Association of Hospital Surgeons. This is an important certification that allows this structure to be a place for training and dissemination of good practices for surgeons, anesthetists, medical directors and nurses, to develop the technical and management skills necessary to safely organize the care path. «This is a strategic training course if we consider that 75% of surgical operations require a post-operative stay of less than 5 days – states the head physician Claudio Nazzaro – and that the differentiation of the surgical offer has revolutionized the organization of the departments surgical with the aim of improving the quality of care according to the principle of the intensity of care based on the complexity of care”. In recent days, in fact, the students of the advanced training master’s degree in ambulatory surgery and day surgery completed the practical training course in the simple departmental structure of short-cycle multidisciplinary surgery, with the training support of the medical director of the “Santa Maria” Pietro Manzi and of the medical director of the unit, Dr. Massimo Rizzo. «Having hosted professionals from four Italian regions for the internship – highlight Dr. Nazzaro and Dr. Taizzani – is a source of pride and satisfaction for us. Being recognized as an Acoi national training center – they conclude – determines for all of us operators the opportunity to host and transmit our efficient organizational model to high-level colleagues, but also that of a fundamental exchange, in terms of relationships, knowledge and skills , to continue moving in a national network system capable of guaranteeing professional growth and cultural development”.
