Today, June 13, the thief has settled for one year and two months prison sentence for attempted theft, suspended sentence. Thus ended the legal case of a 56-year-old homeless man from Georgia and Italy. The man, assisted by the lawyer Alberto Bianchi of the Venice Bar, was revoked the precautionary measure of the residence ban in Veneto previously issued by the investigating judge to prevent him from striking again.
THE INTRUSION
The 56-year-old took action at the end of April. He had tried to break into an apartment in via Verga. But he had not used the necessary precautions. Since he has some difficulty walking, he used the elevator to go up to the fifth floor. Then he stopped in front of the door of the apartment chosen as the target. There he had brought out the entire set of burglary tools. Evidently he was counting on a lightning-fast action that would not arouse suspicion. Instead, unfortunately for him, the police inspector who lives across the street became suspicious of the noises, took a look through the peephole in the door and then went out to check. Realizing that something was wrong, had raised the alarm. The criminal, sensing that he had been discovered, first tried to hide in the hope that the killjoy neighbor would go away and then attempted to escape. But at the exit of the elevator he found the police officers.
THE ARREST
The 56-year-old was therefore put in handcuffs. With him, at the time of his arrest, he had burglary tools; while on the door there were unmistakable signs of attempted break-in. The following day, the foreigner appeared before the judge to validate the arrest and immediately. Today the legal case ended with a plea agreement of 14 months, suspended sentence. The case had caused quite a stir, precisely because of the fortuitous circumstances that had allowed the theft to be foiled. The off-duty policeman’s quick wit had proved crucial, saving his neighbor from being raided.
